"From the beginning of our season, we set some goals and standards for ourselves. Going back even to last spring, the guys have been working hard for this. We've talked about ending the season with a banner or trophy lifted above their head or tears in their eyes. We saw Georgetown, Union and Lee lose and end their season here, and with respect to those guys, but we fought hard to make sure that didn't happen to us," said Adam Preston, CU head coach. "Now we have the opportunity to play for a national championship."
CU wasted little time to get on the board, scoring in the fourth minute on a Roraigh Yearwood goal, assisted by Kevon Farqhuarson.
Lee's Justin Furey evened the score, 1-1, before halftime in the 41st minute, helped by Chevon Roberts.
Farqhuarson connected with Yearwood again in the 78th minute to give CU its eventual game-winner, as CU held on for its third trip to the national tournament since rejoining the NCCAA in 2008.
"It took Kev a while to get settled into our style of play and this level of play, but he was phenomenal all weekend. Tonight, he absolutely put the game on his shoulders. We started off really well, and I think when we scored we kind of settled and we weren't where we needed to be," Preston said.
"Kevon was not going to let us lose that game. When he and Roraigh are playing well together, I'm not sure there's a better strike force in the country at any level, and we've not even seen the best of what they're capable of. Kev was huge. Even after we scored our last goal, he dropped back and fought hard for every possession. It was smart, and I'm not just proud but in awe of his ability."
CU gave up eight shots in the game, including five in the second half, but only three shots were on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Max Malachiyev had two saves in the win.
CU's record, now 17-3-1, ties the 2008 team's win total – the first team to make the NCCAA National Tournament. CU set a program record for wins with 19 in 2010 and a Mid-East Region championship. That was the freshman campaign for this year's seniors: Tomas Arocha, John Kennedy, Dru Sin and Camilo Roman.
"Those guys have sacrificed a lot of who they could have been to make this season special. Tomas, Milo, John and Dru have put things on the line to make this team better. I'm very grateful for what they've done and what they mean to this program now and for the future," Preston said.
Brackets and seeding for the 2013 NCCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament will be announced Sunday evening, Nov. 24. Â The tournament will be played Dec. 2-7 in Kissimmee, Fla.
