CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Ninth-ranked Campbellsville University moved to 3-0 on the season with a 77-61 win over Huntington University Saturday night in Powell Athletic Center – the first true test of the season for the Lady Tigers.
"We have a lot still to work on, but I am pleased with our production. Overall, it was a god win against a good team," said Ginger Colvin, CU head coach. "They have such a solid team, and it was a really good test for us to be able to go up against them. They have some scorers and their offensive scheme is a really good offensive scheme. They run it well, and are very well coached."
Huntington took a 5-0 lead in the first minute and a half of the game but Campbellsville shut down the Foresters for the next four minutes, building an 11-0 run, which grew into a 29-2 run over 12 minutes.
"Lindsey Burd stands out to me during that run. She was everywhere. Her hands were everywhere," said Colvin. "I'm not sure if she scored much during that stretch but she was real active in our zone and made a lot happen. She has such energy and brought a lot of energy."
Burd's hands sure were everywhere.
Burd blocked Huntington's Pazia Speed to end the early 5-0 skid. She followed with CU's first basket of the game at 18:06. Burd also completed a 3-point play in the first 14 minutes of the half, but her name scattered across the stat sheet, adding added two steals, two assists, two defensive rebounds and an offensive board in the 29-2 run. The sophomore forward finished the game with eight points, eight boards, four assists and four steals.
After going up 31-9, Campbellsville went cold for five minutes. Huntington used the time to build a 10-0 run before Angie Lawrence hit a 3 with 34 seconds left in the half to make it 34-19 at the break.
"That would have been a great stretch for them to get back into the game, and they didn't," Colvin said.
One of the main reasons for CU's lead not to shrink much during the drought was rebounding.
CU rebounded 4-of-5 opportunities coming off the Huntington glass in the final minutes of the half, and out-rebounded the Foresters 23-13 in the first half with eight boards by sophomore center Kristen Jacob.
The Lady Tigers finished the game with 40 rebounds to Huntington's 30.
"It's nice to look at a stat sheet and know you've out-rebounded somebody. That's something we've talked about since the day we set foot on campus," Colvin said. "We didn't look at many stat sheets last year where we out-rebounded. We've had such production in our post. Every post that came in for us produced, and I thought they did a good job."
In the second half, Campbellsville stretched its lead to as many as 24 points, 57-33. The closest Huntington got was 13 points, 70-57, with 4:14 to play.
Jacob and Burd led CU's rebounding efforts with eight each, while Daizah Kimberland had seven along with 11 points.
CU's post players combined for 45 points and 29 rebounds, led by Mary Jehlik's 16 points. Colvin feels one reason is Jacob playing a career-high 29 minutes.
"We didn't commit to a 5 last year. We committed to a post and four guards, and we want to get away from that," Colvin said. "The way they're calling fouls this year, and the way they are enforcing some rules, we feel like we can stick in there now. Our post has experience and if we are able to pound it inside more, it's going to open more up for us."
Katie Allen followed Jehlik's lead with 12 points and five assists. Angie Lawrence had 10 points.
Huntington was led by 15 points by Amelia Recker and Speed, followed by 13 points by Kelsey Hubble.
Campbellsville (3-0) will return to action Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m., when it hosts Oakland City University.
