Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A two-run home run in the fourth proved to be the difference Tuesday, as Campbellsville University won its 2013 baseball season opener, 4-2, at Trevecca Nazarene University's Jackson Field.
Â
Campbellsville held an early 1-0 lead after a Patrick McMeel double scored Michael Bush in the first inning. The score held through three, before the Tigers added three more runs in the fourth. Shayne Kelly (2-for-4) delivered a one-out double in the fourth, followed by a base hit for Ryan Squires to put runners on the corners. Carlos Torres scored Kelly with a ground out to short, but senior first baseman Brandon Johnson followed with a two-run shot, giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
Through 4 2/3 innings, CU starting pitcher Michael DeRooy allowed only two walks, no hits, until giving up back-to-back singles in the fifth. He escaped the threat with a ground out to first, but the Trojans were starting to build confidence against the transfer from Washington State University.
TNU third baseman Cade Seeley reached on an error at first to start the sixth inning and Nick Howell singled before CU recorded its first out of the inning. After Mark Rayburn singled-in Seeley for the first Trojans' run of the day, Jeff Larabee took over on the CU mound. Larabee gave up a single up the middle to Newman, cutting the Tigers' lead in half, but Larabee and Tylar Schmunk went on to pitch out of the jam.
CU used Matt Robertson and Mason Yates out of the bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings before Drew Pettit took over in the ninth to record the save. DeRooy recorded his first win for the Tigers, allowing two runs, one earned, off four hits and two walks through 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three.
Kelly was the only Tiger to collect multiple hits in the game, as five others collected hits for a total of seven on the day for CU. Trevecca's five hits all came in the last 4 1/3 innings, with Corey Crunk hitting 2-for-4. Â
Rob Rowland pitched six innings for the Trojans (0-4) in the losing effort, allowing four earned runs off six hits.
