Tigers sweep Asbury, 9-0 and 8-4

WILMORE, Ky. – Frigid temps didn't slow Campbellsville University's bats Thursday afternoon, as the Tigers swept Asbury University, 9-0 and 8-4, on the road.

Campbellsville native Aaron Schwoebel scored four times in the doubleheader sweep, while Tanner Nielsen and Travis Hayes each scored three times – accounting for 10 of CU's 17 runs on the day.

 



CAMPBELLSVILLE 9, ASBURY 0

Schwoebel's first run came in the top of the second in game one. He singled with one out and then stole second before scoring on an RBI single from Shayne Kelly. CU's 1-0 lead held until the fifth, when the Tigers used two errors and a single to score Tanner Nielsen and Travis Hayes.

Schwoebel walked to start the sixth and scored after three wild pitches, to stretch CU's lead to 4-0. The Tigers loaded the bases to start the seventh and added a five spot. Brandon Johnson and Keaton Neeb recorded RBIs with a walk and sac fly, respectively. Schowebel (2-for-2) delivered a one-out RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch before Michael Bush capped the inning with a two-out RBI single.

Sean Bouthilette (1-1) recorded his first win of the season, allowing four hits through five scoreless innings. He struck out two. Mason Yates and Shane Woodson pitched an inning of relief work in the win.

Bush, Schwoebel and Hayes each had two hits in the game.

CAMPBELLSVILLE 8, ASBURY 4

In the night cap, CU and Asbury played on despite a wind chill in the mid to upper 20s.

The Tigers took advantage of four errors, a few walks, two wild pitches and four RBI singles by Neeb, Bush, Nielsen and Hayes. Two of the runs in the inning came off errors, while two more were scored on a sac bunt by Tanner Scott and a sac fly by Josh Potter.

Brandon Johnson had CU's only other hit in the night cap with a two-out, bunt single in the fourth.

Jeff Larabee (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings for the win. He exited after giving up three runs in the third. Patrick Honahan, Darrick Brilz, Jr. and Jacob Phillips each made relief appearances for the Tigers. Phillips gave up a run in the bottom of the fifth before the game was called due to darkness.

Campbellsville (4-1) will open Mid-South Conference play on the road Saturday and Sunday at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky. The Tigers will meet the Patriots in a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m. EST, and then will play a nine-inning game Sunday at 1 p.m. EST. Sunday's game was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed due to weather.
