Tigers sweep MSC baseball opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Fifteen runs and 23 hits led Campbellsville University to a pair of come-from-behind wins Saturday, 12-2 and 3-2, at the University of the Cumberlands.

The Tigers fell behind 1-0 to start the day but evened the game in the third before breaking the game open with four-run innings in the fifth and sixth. CU later added a run in the seventh and two in the top of the ninth.

 



Shortstop Tanner Nielsen led CU with a 4-for-5 game while score twice and driving in two runs. Angelo Simmons knocked in two runs and was 3-for-5 in the Mid-South Conference opener, while Shayne Kelly was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Keaton Neeb and Patrick McMeel also had two hits in the game.

The Tigers had six doubles in the game, two from McMeel.

Bret DeRooy and Allen Hewey split time on the mound in the first game, each allowing one earned run. DeRooy allowed five hits in four innings, while Hewey allowed four hits in five innings pitched.

In the second game, Cumberlands pushed across a pair of runs in the first inning. CU got on the board in the fourth with a two-our RBI single from Kelly to score Nielsen.

The Tigers took the lead in the Top of the seventh, taking advantage of two errors and an RBI single by Travis Hayes.

Josh Potter was the only Tiger with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3.

McMeel recorded the win in relief after taking over with one out in the third. McMeel allowed one hit through 4 2/3 innings, while starter Tylar Schmunk pitched 2 1/3, allowing two runs off two hits. McMeel had eight strikeouts.

Campbellsville (7-1, 2-0 MSC) will return to Cumberlands (5-6, 0-2 MSC) on Sunday for a 1 p.m. EST start time for the final game of a three-game Mid-South Conference series.
