Lady Tigers advance to 200 medley finals to start NAIA meet

OKLAHOMA CITY – Campbellsville University competed in three of its four events, advancing to the finals in one, during its first day at the NAIA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.

The Lady Tigers qualified for the 200-yard medley relay finals Thursday night after posting the 13th best time during preliminaries, nearly edging rival Lindsey Wilson College.

During the morning prelims, CU's relay team of Bailey Foxworth, April Hill, Jenna Rueff and Shelby Mattingly posted a season-best time of 1:56.57. LWC's time was 1:56.49.

Foxworth started the race with a time of 31.58, nearly 2.5 seconds behind Lindsey Wilson, but the rest of the Lady Tigers out did their rival. Hill, swam her leg of the race in 31.27, while Rueff's time was 28.43 seconds and Mattingly 25.39.

The medley relay was the first finals event of the night Thursday, with CU finishing 15th overall with a time of 1:57.65. The 15th place finish scored four team points for the Lady Tigers.

Earlier in the day, CU also competed in two individual events.

Foxworth finished 27th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:41.03, while Mattingly was seventh in her heat and 31st overall in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.69.

The Lady Tigers were disqualified from competition in the 800-yard freestyle relay after an early start.

Oklahoma Baptist University leads the team standings after the second day of full competition with 290 team points. Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is second with 153 points, followed by the University of the Cumberlands (145).

Other Kentucky schools in the standings are Asbury University (8th, 49), Union College (9th, 43), Lindsey Wilson College (12th, 18) and Campbellsville (17th, 4).

Cumberlands' Charlotte Parent won the national title in the 200-yard individual medley.

Competition will resume Friday at the Oklahoma City Community College Natatorium with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. CST. CU will first compete in the 200-yard freestyle relay and will have a three-event break before April Hill competes in the 100-yard breaststroke. The morning session will close with the 400-yard medley relay. Finals for these events will begin at 6 p.m. CST.
