WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Campbellsville (12) came out flat and stayed that way Saturday afternoon against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), losing 64-58. Although CU stayed within 10 points the entire game, they were unable to cut the deficit below five after the first few minutes. Head coach Ginger Colvin thinks the team deserved the loss.
"We played with absolutely no heart today," said Colvin. "We did nothing offensively and threw the ball all over the gym. Hayley Hellyer played great and was about the only heart out there. My leaders aren't playing with any intensity or focus, though. We have no excuses. Today was a heart-check day and a gut-check day, but we failed."
The loss was the second of the week for CU who also fell on the road to No. 1 in the MSC and No. 6 nationally, Cumberland University, Thursday night. The double-loss is the first of the season for CU, which is now 10-5 in the MSC, 18-6 overall.
Senior guard Mackenzie Lee scored the first bucket of the game, giving the Tigers their only lead. A three-pointer from Patriots' leading scorer Dace Bicane quickly put Campbellsville behind, though, where they would stay for the remainder of the game. The Lady Tigers fought to keep the deficit in single-digits, but couldn't produce much offensively.
Campbellsville trailed by five (24-29) at the half.
Lady Patriot Erica Lane began the second half scoring on a fast break lay-up, the first of 18 points in the half for the junior guard. The Knoxville native averages just over six points a game, but ended the night as the leading scorer with a total of 22 points.
Midway through the half, CU post Hellyer gave an impressive performance, taking two charges, lobbing an assist to Kristin Jacob, and scoring a field goal of her own in just over a two-minute period. Despite the junior's efforts, Campbellsville still could not match that of the Cumberlands.
The Lady Tigers trailed by as much as 10 at three different instances in the period and came within a five-points four times, but never could manage to cut it any lower.
Clifton ended the night as the Campbellsville leading scorer with 13. No other Lady Tigers achieving double figures.
The two losses of the week will drop CU in both MSC and national rankings which will be released next week.
Campbellsville will continue to play on the road next week as it heads to the University of Virginia at Wise on Thursday. Tip-off time is scheduled at 6 p.m. EDT. To follow the Lady Tigers, go to www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
