Tigers sweep Bryan College in midweek doubleheader

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University recorded a shutout in the first half of its Tuesday, March 12 doubleheader against Bryan College at HIG Field,4-0, before sweeping the day with a 5-3 nightcap win.

 



CU started the day out with a base-hit single into shallow left field off the bat of leadoff man Tanner Neilson. Neilson was moved to second base with a sacrifice bunt from Michael Bush and advanced to third with his 10th stolen base of the season. Neilson recorded his second steal of the game, breaking from for home on a throw to second base by the Bryan College catcher too give Campbellsville its first run of the afternoon, 1-0.

The score remained the same until the third inning when Bush singled into centerfield. Bush advanced to second on a fielder's choice, then to third with a steal. He scored on an RBI double from Keaton Neeb, CU 2-0.  

In the bottom of the sixth inning CU took advantage of two hit batters, scoring them both. Aaron Schwoebel was hit by a pitch to start the inning off, and stole both second and third base before being batted in by Brandon Johnson. Shayne Kelly was the second CU batter to wear a pitch in the sixth. Kelly was batted around the infield before he scored from third on a wild pitch, stretching Campbellsville's lead, 4-0.

Drew Pettit started the game on the mound for CU in his first NAIA start at CU. He pitched 3 2/3  innings, striking out six and allowing four hits, but exited the game after allowing a two-out single in the fourth. Mason Yates took over and pitched the next 2 1/3 innings to receive the win in relief before Jacob Phillips closed the game in the seventh. Yates struck out three of the nine batters he faced.

CU racked up just six hits in the game, including five in the first three innings.  

Game two of the doubleheader proved to be more of a challenge for CU. Campbellsville won the game 5-3, giving up six hits through seven innings. The Tigers recorded just five hits of their own.

The offense started out early for Campbellsville in game two as well. Nielson started the game off with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a steal. He reached third on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Aaron Schwoebel was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, CU 1-0.

Campbellsville continued the offense in the second inning with a Kelly leadoff walk, followed by an Angelo Simmons RBI double to deep left-center field, CU 2-0. Simmons moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Nielson, before being batted in on a Josh Potter sacrifice fly to centerfield, CU 3-0.

Bryan College plated its first run of the afternoon in the top of third on an RBI single, after Jeff Larabee walked the first two batters of the inning, CU 3-1.

Campbellsville scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, 5-1. Simmons led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a Neilson sacrifice bunt. Simmons stole third base before being batted in by a Bush single. Bush advanced to second on a stolen base before scored off a Neeb double down the leftfield line.

Despite giving up a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, Campbellsville was able to hold onto its 5-3 victory through seven innings. Larabee was credited with the win after four innings of work. Yates, Phillips and Allen Hewey each saw action in relief.

Campbellsville (14-4) will return to its home diamond Thursday, March 14 at 1:30 p.m. EDT for a double header against Ohio Mid-Western College.
