Tigers drop MSC series to UVA-Wise

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University was unable to stop the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Saturday, as the Cavaliers used a big third inning to break open the game in a 12-2 win at HIG Field. The win completes the first Mid-South Conference series win of the season for UVA-Wise, which now moves into a tie for sixth place in the MSC standings.

 



Tommy Meier led the Cavs with three runs scored after starting the UVA-Wise offense with two outs in the top of the first. After Tylar Schmunk recorded two outs to start the game, Meier singled to start a two-run, four-hit inning for Wise. Michael McCollum and Brettt Hylton delivered the RBI singles. Meier did it again in the third, battling twice in the inning, as Wise racked up six runs off six hits and a couple of errors.

CU responded with a run in the third and fourth. Michael Bush doubled in the third and scored on an RBI single by Keaton Neeb. In the fourth, Levi McCamish entered to run for Allen Hewey and scored on an RBI sac fly from Tanner Nielsen.  

Wise went on to score a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh, while holding CU scoreless the rest of the way.

Campbellsville collected eight hits in the game and had a total of 13 base runners, leaving 11 on base. Hylton led the Cavs' offense with a 3-for-4 day and two RBIs, while McCollum, Tyler Hutson, Meier and Chaz Hall each had two hits and an RBI.

Neeb and Bush each had two hits for the Tigers.

Mat Irish (3-2) went the distance for Wise, allowing one earned run off eight hits. He walked two and hit two.

Schmunk fell to 2-2 on the year, allowing six earned runs, seven total, off eight hits and a walk.

Allen Hewey pitched three innings, while Drew Pettit and Jeff Larabee also saw time in relief.

CU (20-6, 7-2 MSC) now closes a 15-game home stand and will travel to Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Ind., Tuesday at 5 p.m.
