Tigers win Senior Day over Cedarville, 7-4

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University baseball sent its seniors out with a victory Tuesday night, as the Tigers beat Cedarville University, 7-4, to close the 2013 regular season.

Michael Bush got the Tigers' offense going in the bottom of the first with a leadoff single and scored on a throwing error.

Campbellsville's big inning was the second, as Brandon Johnson reached on a bunt single. Shayne Kelly pushed Johnson to second on a bunt, but with third base open, Johnson took second and then scored with no one covering the plate. The sneaky base running sparked a three-run inning, as Angelo Simmons followed with a single and scored on a double by Travis Hayes. Bush hit a sac fly to center to plate Josh Potter, who singled after Simmons.

Cedarville scored its first run in the top of the second after Steve Cardwell collected a one-out single and later scored on an RBI hit up the middle by Dan Larkin. Cardwell finished the game, 2-for-4.

The run was the only one off Tiger senior Dario Bortolotto, who pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing six hits in his first career win.

The Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth after Keaton Neeb had a one out single. Courtesy runner Levi McCammish scored on an RBI by Johnson, the only Tiger with two hits in the game.

Drew Pettit, who took over for Bortolotto to get out of the fifth, gave up three runs in the top of the sixth to allow Cedarville within one run, 5-4. Pettit gave up four straight walks in the sixth to score the first run, while the second scored on a wild throw by Neeb. The third came across when David Lenhardt hit a sac fly to left.

Campbellsville added insurance in the bottom of the eight. Patrick McMeel was hit by a pitch to start the inning. McCammish entered as a pinch runner and later scored on a single by Aaron Schwoebel. Ryan Squires, who followed McMeel with a walk, scored the second run of the inning on a sac fly by Potter.

Mason Yates pitched three innings in relief and Tylar Schmunk closed the game in the ninth with three strikeouts for the save.

Prior to the game, CU honored its seniors: Dario Bortolotto, Sean Bouthilette, Travis Hayes, Brandon Johnson, Patrick McMeel, Keaton Neeb, Tanner Nielsen, Drew Pettit, Lance Riddle, Tylar Schmunk and Mason Yates.

Campbellsville (28-17) will meet the University of Rio Grande in the Mid-South Conference Tournament at 1 p.m. EDT on Thursday.
