DES MOINES, Iowa – Campbellsville University women's wrestling had their first appearance at the NWCA/WCWA Cliff Keen National Duals Saturday, falling in the first round to No. 5 Lindenwood University, 23-22.
The Lady Tigers started the match with a bang, winning their first three matches from
Cassidy Ferrell (Dec. 6-3);
Breonnah Neal, ranked No. 4, (Tech Fall, 10-0) and
Michelle Lomas, ranked No. 10, (Tech Fall, 10-0). That gave CU an 11-1 early lead.
Kasey Ricketts had a tough match but wrestled hard during a loss at 123 pounds. Rosemary Flores, ranked No. 3, pinned her opponent easily and got the team motivated to win the dual. With CU leading 16-5, Kasey Kruczek had a tough match at 136 pounds but she wrestled hard and did not give up a pin or a tech and fell 4-2 to help the team with points. At 143 pounds, Hanna Hall recorded a pin to give CU a 22-8 lead.
However, Campbellsville was unable to gain the one point it needed to advance in the winner's bracket.
Lindenwood closed the match recording 15 straight points – the most it could – as fifth-ranked Michelle Organ was pinned at 155 pounds and CU forfeited its 170 pounds without an entry. The dual came down to the last match of the night. Freshman Tiaira Scott, making her first appearance of the season, was pinned with just over a minute remaining, giving Lindenwood the edge.
After the match, coach Lee Miracle said, "Even though we are a new wrestling program, other schools are noticing how tough we are to beat."
CU will meet Missouri Baptist University in an elimination dual Sunday morning at 10 a.m. ET. Both teams are tied for No. 6 in the latest Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association poll.
