DES MOINES, Iowa – Campbellsville University posted its first two wins in program history against ranked programs and did so to place seventh at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Women's National Duals on Sunday.
Campbellsville, which went 2-2 on the weekend, beat No. 6 Missouri Baptist University and No. 13 McKendree University to place in its first-ever National Duals event. CU was just shy of a chance to place fifth, falling to No. 8 University of the Cumberlands, 26-20, in the consolation semifinals.
"The team was complimented all weekend on how tough they compete. This is a testament to the hours and hours of work they put in. It's amazing that the difference between fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth place teams is really just one swing match or a couple of points," said Lee Miracle, who is in his first year as CU's coach. "We are way ahead of my schedule as far as goals for the team. I have already begun reassessing our team goals for next year. It's a wonderful problem to have."
Campbellsville entered the weekend tied in the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) rankings at No. 6 with Missouri Baptist. The two squared off in an elimination dual to start the day Sunday with Campbellsville coming out on top, 26-19.
CU took a 7-1 lead after the first two weights but the Spartans evened the team score, 8-8 with wins at 116 and 123 pounds. CU then recorded back-to-back pins by Rosemary Flores and Kasey Kruczek to provide a 10-point cushion with four weights remaining. Hanna Hall picked up a 9-7 decision at 143 pounds, making it 21-9, but Karissa Avallone pinned Michelle Organ at 150 and then MBU gained five more team points on CU's forfeit at 170 to pull within two points, 21-19. Entering the heavyweight bough, Tiaira Scott needed to either win or score a point in a decision loss to keep CU's hopes alive. Scott did better than that, pinning MBU's Aylin Hernandez with seven seconds remaining in the first period for her first collegiate win.
The Lady Tigers then went on to face Cumberlands for the fourth time this season. Two of CU's previous losses to Cumberlands were decided by one weight and a forfeit. Sunday wasn't much different.
The Patriots took a 14-6 lead through the first four weights with CU scoring on a tech fall by Breonnah Neal and two points in losses by Cassidy Ferrell and Michelle Lomas. Flores picked up a pin at 130 to pull within six points, 17-11, but Kruczek was pinned at 136. Hall and Organ won and lost decisions, respectively, to keep the Patriots' lead at six points, 21-15. CU and Cumberlands traded forfeits at 170 and 191 to round out the scoring.
The Lady Tigers battled back to dominate their final dual, 35-12, against McKendree, which is also in its first year as a program. CU scored team points in every match wrestled in the dual, including pins by Lomas, Flores and Kruczek. Hall and Organ had tech falls, while Neal and Scott received wins by forfeit.
Flores led CU with four pins during the weekend, including one over second-ranked Cheyenne Youngblood (MBU), while Neal and Hall were also 4-0. The trio combined for 52 team points and allowed only two. Scott recorded three wins, two by forfeit, while Ferrell, Lomas and Kruczek each had two wins in the tournament.
Altogether, CU scored 103 team points and allowed 80.
"These young women have busted their tails for me. They are buying in to what I am teaching them. I am extremely proud of all of them. They are going out there every match and fighting every point. They all have matured through the season as wrestlers and are peaking at the right time," said Miracle. "I feel very blessed to just be a part of it. I believe that with the continued support of the university, hard work and some help from the recruits we have coming in, we can be a contender for the national championship in two years. More importantly, these young women are starting to believe that too."
The National Duals tournament concludes CU's duals season. The Lady Tigers will take a week off before traveling to St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 23-25 for the WCWA National Tournament.
