CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger basketball came out firing from behind the arch as Katie Allen and Angie Lawrence both hit six 3-pointers and combined for 41 points, as Campbellsville rolled to a 94-62 win over Lindsey Wilson College.
"Wow," said CU head coach Ginger Colvin. "This was a big win and its great to beat a rival on our home court. I usually don't look at the score often but tonight the game went from 10 points to 30 in a snap. It shows how hot we got during the final 13 minutes. Our defense played great tonight as the zone was very effective. It was a great overall win."
CU came out sluggish to start the game but once again Allen came to the rescue. The Fort Thomas, Ky. native drained her first three, 3-point shots on the night. Allen finally missed with 11:54 remaining on the clock but hit two more later on and finished the first half shooting 5-for-6 from behind the arc. Allen led the Lady Tigers in the opening frame with 20 points; just one shy of her career high.
Kayla Richardson led LWC with seven points in the first 11-plus minutes. She was the main reason the Blue Raiders were able to take their first and only lead at the 8:33 mark, 20-18.
But Campbellsville took the lead back on a contested layup by Kristen Jacob with 5:43 remaining, a lead it would never relinquish. The two points were Jacob's only two of the first half.
CU then went on a 14-3 run to end the half, which was led by two 3s by Allen and Lawrence, a couple free-throws from Allen and Daizah Kimberland and a layup by Lindsey Burd with time running out to put Campbellsville up 40-28 at the half.
Lindsey Wilson was able to shoot 48 percent from the floor in the first half and Campbellsville only shot 34.1 percent. But CU shot 16 more times (14-for-41) compared to only 12-for-25 for the Blue Raiders.
The Lady Tigers came out of the break and were just as hot as they ended the first half. CU's post players came out and their unselfish play led to CU's biggest lead (15) thus far at the 14:52 mark. Jacob, Kimberland, Jehlik and Burd all scored a basket in the first five-plus minutes and all recorded an assist. Jehlik finished with a career high five assists.
But Lawrence and Allen did not let their teammates steal the show for too long though, as the sharp-shooting duo heated up.
With 13:31 remaining in the second half and CU up by 18 points, 54-36, Lawrence came open on the left wing and hit her first of six 3s in the final 13 minutes as she was a perfect 6-for-6 in the final frame.
Lawrence finished the night shooting 6-for-8, all from 3, and scored 18 points. It was the second time this season Lawrence has hit six-plus 3-pointers in a game as she did so against Pikeville on Nov. 23.
Allen shot only three times in the second half, but with 12:47 left on the clock she hit a 3 to eclipse her previous career-high. Allen finished with 23 points; which was the second time in the last four games she has broken her own record. She scored 21 points against Shawnee State on Jan. 16.
"Katie and Angie were both hot from behind the arc," said Colvin. "Katie was hot in the first half and Angie caught fire in the second half. They really stepped up tonight and it was good to see Angie get back on track."
With five minutes remaining on the clock, Ginger Colvin cleared her bench as the CU reserves entered the game at the final media timeout. Abby Miller used a nifty pass and hit a streaking Lindey Young who capitalized on her first bucket. In the final 4:34, Young scored eight of the 10 CU points, with Lindsey Ramage scoring the other two on free-throws.
"We have such a deep bench and we don't lose much when the next five players go into the game. Our girls don't play more than 20 minutes a game usually and it keeps them fresh. It is something we have really been lucky to establish here in our program."
Colvin started her series against Lindsey Wilson with a 1-4 record but the Lady Tigers have now won 11 straight over the Blue Raiders. The average margin of victory in those 11 wins sits at 25.6 points.
CU moves to (19-2, 9-1 MSC) for the first time since the 2009-10 season when it started 19-1 and finished a perfect 14-0 in MSC play.
Lindsey Wilson drops to 14-8 overall and 4-6 in the MSC. They will travel to St. Catharine College on Saturday, Feb. 1 to take on the Patriots at 2 p.m.
Campbellsville will also be back in action on Saturday as it will host Cumberland University (9-9, 5-5 MSC). Game time is set for 2 p.m.
"Cumberland University is another big game for us," said Colvin. "One of heir post players has been sick and may not be at 100 percent but they have two guards who are phenominal."
The CUs met up earlier this season on Jan. 4, with Campbellsville winning 70-66 in a nail bitter. But guard Casie Cowen was on fire from behind the arc as she went 6-for-8 and finished with 28 points. So it may not matter if Cumberland University's post is a little under the weather because Cowan who is averaging 15.6 points can take over any game in a heart beat.
