CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Saturday was Homecoming for Campbellsville University head coach Thom Jones and the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets. While Jones enjoyed coaching against his alma mater and visiting with family, Campbellsville's bid to spoil the Yellow Jackets' festivities fell short, 1-0.
Despite the loss, Jones was glad to see how his team performed against the Yellow Jackets (6-4) with two starters injured.
"I'm very pleased with our performance. We worked hard and played well, we just came up short," Jones said. "Playing in this weather and on the thick grass really hurt our finishing today. If we play with this same intensity and passion, we are going to finish the season very well."
Playing on wet grass and in windy, 45-degree weather, Campbellsville managed to lead the first half for shots on goal. However, the Lady Tigers were unable to slip one past Cedarville keeper Hanna Harris. Mhairi Fyfe had two shots saved and another hit off the post in the first 25 minutes for the Lady Tigers.
Cedarville scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 33rd minute when Elise Hurley used a long run to tap in a cross from Kristie Wolff. Ceadarville's only other shot on goal in the first half was saved by Amanda Howard in the 45th minute.
Howard had three other saves in the second half.
Campbellsville's biggest shot came in the 65th minute when Aly Shireman's shot off a corner kick was saved from point-blank range by Harris.
In all, Campbellsville led the game with 13 total shots to Cedarville's nine.
Harris had five saves and her second straight shutout for Cedarville.
Jones is now 2-4 against Cedarville, where he played from 1988-1991 for the Yellow Jackets' men's team, while being named the team MVP and a Mid-Ohio Conference Second Team selection in 1991.
Campbellsville (5-6) will play three of its next four games at home, beginning with NCAA Division II opponent Kentucky Wesleyan College on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. EDT.
