MARSHALL, Mo. – Campbellsville University's two top-ranked wrestlers proved their No. 1 ranking in Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association action Saturday, as Kayla Miracle and Tiaira Scott each claimed first place at the Missouri Valley Open.
Miracle did not allow a point all day as she tech'd each of her six opponents, 10-0, to win at 130 pounds. Scott also breezed through her bracket (191 pounds) with a pair of pins and tech falls.
The Lady Tigers had seven individuals place in the tournament and one unattached grappler. The highest two behind Miracle and Scott were Michelle Lomas at 116 pounds and Shelby Hall at 123.
Lomas moved up a weight and was unseeded entering the day. She dropped her first match, 18-16, to University of the Cumberlands' Alex Campbell, but bounced back with a tech fall and three pins, including a revenge win over Campbell to reach the consolation semifinals. Lomas beat McKendree's Lindsey Spjut, 7-4, but fell by tech fall in the third-place match to Menlo's Kalin Knight-Alvarez.
Hall started the day with three falls, but lost in the 123-pound semifinals to Jacarra Winchester, who is ranked No. 2 at 130 behind Miracle. Hall then edged Cumberlands' Sherri Berube, 5-4, but lost in the third-place match by tech fall to Lindenwood's Diaysha Moore.
Kasey Kruczek finished seventh at 136 pounds, while Hanna Hall (143) and Kaitlyn Hill (170) each placed eight for CU. Hall lost her seventh-place match to CU freshman Hannah Gladden, who was wrestling unattached. Â
While the Missouri Valley Open was CU's first tournament during its inaugural season last season, the Lady Tigers entered Saturday's tournament with eight days of wrestling under their belt.
"We're a much better team just because of our returners and their experience. Throw in the fact we have some heavy-hitter freshman like Miracle, Shelby Hall and Kaitlyn Hill in areas we weren't quite as strong last year, and we're a much better team than where we were this time last year," CU head coach Lee Miracle said.
Campbellsville will come home for the first time this season on Dec. 6, hosting Missouri Valley College, Missouri Baptist University, University of the Cumberlands and Life University for duals beginning at 10 a.m. The four-mat duals session will be hosted in Powell Athletic Center. Each team will wrestle four duals apiece.Â
