Defense leads LTB in rout over UPIKE

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. —Campbellsville Women's Basketball continued its hot shooting and high-pressured defense from Thursday nights win over Cumberlands. The Lady Tigers used shooting streaks to open each half and turned Pikeville over 23 times, routing the Bears, 93-65.

BOX SCORE

Campbellsville came out firing from all cylinders, making 5-of-6 shots and taking a 10-2 lead in the first two minutes. LeeAnn Grider led the Lady Tigers and dug deep into her repertoire, knocking down the lone 3-pointer for CU in the first half.

Grider picked up a career-high 11 points in the first 20 minutes leading CU.

The offense was overshadowed by the high-pressure zone defense that gave Pikeville fits. UPIKE came in averaging just over 18 turnovers a game but Campbellsville caused havoc for the Bears, turning them over 11 times in the opening 10 minutes.

UPIKE also went cold from the floor and Campbellsville was able to extend its lead. The Bears went 3-plus minutes without a point until Kelah Eldridge hit her second 3-pointer at the 4:43 mark.

Campbellsville ended the final 4:43 on a 14-6 run and took a 46-20 lead going into the intermission. CU shot a blistering 19-for-39 (48.7 percent) in the first half compared to Pikeville's 34 percent (8-for-23).

"Our defense was the difference in the game," said CU head coach Ginger Colvin. "Our defensive pressure really gave them fits and showed how versatile we are. Our bigs can transition out to guarding their one or two's (guards) and still create turnovers. That is huge for our defensive sets."

The Lady Tigers kept their offense rolling as Daizah Kimberland picked up her fifth field goal in as many tries. Campbellsville kept its defensive pressure high and trapped Pikeville at the mid court stripe forcing a timeout just 30 seconds into the second half. Out of the timeout, CU trapped the Bears once again forcing a desperation shot, as time expired on the shot clock.

Campbellsville rolled from there on, starting the second period shooting 6-for-7 to take a 58-27 lead with 17:00 on the clock.

Kimberland stayed perfect throughout the game, hitting all eight of her field goals and leading Campbellsville with 18 points.

"The thing about Daizah is she has moved out to a wing this year and hasn't missed a beat," said Colvin. "With our forwards playing well early on, Daizah has really shot the ball well from the floor like we needed and it showed today."

"We have been struggling from the offensive end of the floor lately and really have preached defense. It was good to see us come out on fire against a really good Pikeville team. Once we got up early, it's hard to come back from that because we had them on their heels the rest of the game and they couldn't get into any rhythm."

UPIKE did eventually calm down and did not turn the ball over in the final nine-plus minutes to end the game. Campbellsville forced 23 UPIKE turnovers and picked up 13 steals. But CU got a little sloppy on the offensive end and turned the ball over 18 times.

Campbellsville had 11 Lady Tigers finish in the scoring column and four picking up double-digit points. Grider and Chelsea Craig both finished with 13 points behind Kimberland and Kristen Jacob picked up 11 points.

Jacob and Craig led the Lady Tigers in rebounding with eight and seven, respectively.

CU will take six days off before playing again. The Lady Tigers will travel to Bluefield College on Friday, Nov. 28 with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. CU will then turn around and play Bluefield State College on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m.
