Box Score BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Campbellsville completed a tough Thanksgiving week swing through Virginia and West Virginia, beating Bluefield State 77-70 Saturday in overtime for the first 10-0 start to a season by Coach Ginger Colvin's Lady Tigers.
"If you're a coach you never really want a game like this," said Colvin. "But this is a perfect setup for what we're going to face next week. To get what we got, I'm pleased."
Lindsey Burd was big for the Lady Tigers early, her play allowed CU (10-0, 3-0 MSC) to break out to a 21-12 lead 10 minutes into the game.
"Lindsey Burd was a huge spark for us early. She got her hands on a ton of stuff," said Colvin.
Burd's stat line was 18 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and five steals in 33 minutes.
Caroline Owen, who picked up her fourth foul with 10 minutes to go in regulation, tied State's Shakima Wiggins and Burd for game scoring honors with 18. She also had four rebounds and five assists. Owen hit two free throws late in overtime to help Campbellsville outscore the home team 7-0 over the final two minutes.
"They were athletic at every position, but we were pretty good in overtime," continued Colvin. "We lost LeeAnn (Grider) in overtime to fouls. She played 41 minutes and they had been getting after her all afternoon."
Grider scored three points and handed out five assists to go along with two steals.
Campbellsville led 63-61 with 20 seconds to go in regulation and a defensive letdown allowed a State layup to force the five-minute overtime period.
"This is by far the most physical game we've played. We were challenged on both ends of the floor."
The Lady Tigers move into their December schedule with a road trip to Columbia, Ky. on Thursday and a 7 p.m. matchup against the No. 19 Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders.
