Miracle wins gold, upsets No. 2 in World at NYAC

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Kayla Miracle increased her international and U.S. senior level stock Nov. 8, being named the Most Outstanding Wrestler and winning the 55kg gold medal at the Bill Farrell International, hosted by the New York Athletic Club at Hofstra University.

Miracle, a Campbellsville University freshman, was one of four U.S. women and eight Americans to win a gold medal Saturday in the international tournament.

"Kayla flat out wrecked the tournament. She wrestled in a class of her own, tech falling a World bronze medalist in the semifinals and coasting to a gold medal win over No. 2 in the country," CU head coach Lee Miracle said. "Miracle is being referred to by many coaches and world class wrestlers as the honey badger. She just doesn't seem to care about who she wrestles, or at what weight … She showed very impressive mental maturity for a freshman as seen by being voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler."

Miracle, ranked No. 6 in the U.S. Senior rankings, upset Canada's Jillian Gallays, ranked No. 2 in the FILA World Rankings and a 2014 World bronze medalist, with a 12-2 tech fall in the semifinals.

The win sent Miracle to her first senior level international finals, where she won a 10-4 decision over Titan Mercury and Missouri Valley College star Jacarra Winchester, ranked No. 3 in the U.S. Senior rankings at 55kg and No. 2 at 130 pounds in the WCWA. Miracle leapt Winchester in the WCWA rankings last week to claim the No. 1 collegiate ranking without having wrestled each other yet. The two could matchup again in next weekend's Missouri Valley Open.

Earlier in the day, Miracle also tech'd fellow Junior National Team member Tanalei Louis, 10-0, in the first round. Louis is a sophomore at Oklahoma City University.

"I knew all my matches today. I had to wrestle my match. (Winchester) is really explosive, quick and technical. I knew I had to focus on me. I have been focusing a lot on continuing to wrestle, no matter how big the scramble is or how tired I am. If I am stretched out a lot, I try to find my way back," Kayla Miracle told USA Wrestling following the title.

In addition to Miracle, CU sophomore Rosemary Flores and freshmen Kait Fitzpatrick and Hannah Gladden also competed in the tournament.

It was Flores' return to her home state and her first international competition as a sponsored wrestler, having recently been sponsored by the New York Athletic Club. It was the first international competition for Fitzpatrick and Gladden.

"Fitzpatrick, Flores and Gladden all got better from experiencing this tournament. They understand the relentless dedication this sport demands to be successful," Lee Miracle said.

Campbellsville University will return to its WCWA schedule Nov. 15 at the Missouri Valley College Open.
