Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. — In a game where baskets were hard to come by, Kristen Jacob got an easy one and fifth-ranked Campbellsville University beat No. 4 Westminster College 56-53 tonight at Durango High School.
It was the first win over a Top 5 opponent since the Lady Tigers defeated No. 3 Azusa Pacific at home in 2011.
"To win on the road and to battle like this … this is just a great win for our program," said coach Ginger Colvin after the game.
With 50 seconds left in regulation Colvin called a play out of a timeout and LeeAnn Grider lobbed a pass to a streaking Kristen Jacob who laid it in for a 56-52 lead. Westminster got the ball back with :08.6 left but could not get off an uncontested shot.
The Griffins(9-1) led most of the first half, one time 20-13, until Jacob followed her own miss and Daizah Kimberland scored her only basket of the first half with under a minute to go before intermission to cap an 11-0 run.
The Lady Tigers (14-1, 4-1 MSC) scored eight of the first 12 points of the second half and led 32-24 when Jacob followed another miss.
Westminster's Jessica Sorensen and Alli Winters combined to score six straight points with 10 minutes left in the game for a 44-42 Griffin advantage.
But Grider hit a 3 and a 45-44 lead that CU would not relinquish.
Jacob led four players in double figures with 15. Grider had 11 and Chelsea Craig and Caroline Owen had 10 apiece. Winters led all scorers with 18. Westminster teammate Mika Penner had 15. Grider had six assists and seven steals in addition to her 11 points.
"I think this is the best team we have beaten since I've been coach," continued Colvin. "They are so well coached."
The Lady Tigers will complete their three-game stint in Las Vegas tomorrow with a game against Montana-Western. Tip is at 7:30 PT/10:30 ET.
