Tigers roll over No. 8 Judson, 8-0

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Campbellsville baseball (4-2) picked up its fourth straight win Sunday, as the Tigers defeated No. 18 Judson University, 8-0.

BOX SCORE

Brad Williams and TR Dunne combined for seven shutout innings on the mound and Carlos Torres continued his hot start going 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead CU with the stick.

"We are making strides in our offensive approaches and our pitching was phenomenal," said head coach Beauford Sanders. "We held them scoreless and played solid ball all the way around."

The Tigers' bats came alive in Saturday's second game against Bethel College and continued Sunday with eight hits and eight runs.

It all started with a walk to Alex Kline and a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Squires. The team first mentality helped CU pick up its bottom of the seventh win in game one Saturday and sparked Campbellsville into a three-run third inning against Judson.

Kline advanced into scoring position on the sacrifice but picked up an extra base when he caught the third baseman napping on the play.

Alex Scanlan singled to right field in the bottom of third to score Kline and Torres picked up his first single on a perfectly placed hit-and-run single to the right side, scoring Kinsella from second base and Scanlan advanced to third.

Jacob Russell came up next with runners on first and third. His groundball to the third baseman, Mark DeYoung, looked to be an inning-ending double play but second baseman, Billy Wrights' throw sailed into the dugout, scoring Scanlan.

Campbellsville led 3-0 going into the fourth.

"We picked up a few timely hits today and made them pay for their mistakes," said Sanders. "They had an error, walked a guy and we picked up an extra base hit to score them both. We also ran the bases really well. The guys picked up extra bases and stretched singles into hustle doubles and Alex Kline picked up the extra base when their third baseman fell asleep."

Campbellsville picked up another three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, which started with another Judson error. Ricky McColloch singled to advance Alex Gutierrez, who got on via error, to third base. Gentry Kinsella drove a ball into the outfield for his first RBI on a sacrifice fly, 4-0 CU.

After another walk by starting pitcher DJ Spears, Judson pulled the freshman who made his second appearance of the season. He struggled overall with his command and when he did have control, CU made him pay with timely hits.

Spears surrendered five walks and six runs (only three earned) in his 3 2/3 innings pitched but his defense surely didn't help him.  Judson recorded two errors with the freshman on the mound.

The Tigers picked up two more runs after the pitching change. Torres sent a rocket double down the third base line, scoring both McColloch and Scanlan.

"We had three straight innings with crooked numbers (3-3-2)," said Sanders. "But the thing that impressed me the most is we scored those runs and got ahead but did not give up any runs to Judson. We are making strides in our offensive approaches and it shows."

Campbellsville picked up two more runs in the fifth on a Jamie Valle single, a balk to move courtesy runner McCamish to second base, a double by McColloch and a single by Kline.

Sanders went to his bullpen after the Tigers went up 8-0 and gave way to TR Dunne who was making his third appearance of the season.

Dunne walked his first batter but settled down and sent the Eagles down in order for the rest of the seven-inning game.

Williams (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after struggling in Jackson, Miss., in the three-game opening weekend. He pitched five strong innings allowing only five hits and walking one. He also struck out six Judson batters.

Dunne finished with two innings of work, one walk and two strikeouts.

"Brad Williams really redeemed himself today," said Sanders. "He struggled in Mississippi on opening weekend, and it's always good to see guys bounce back. It is really big for us and our pitching staff for him to come back the way he did. Brad got better and stronger as the game moved along and gained confidence. I was really pleased with his poise and how he used all of his pitches to get ahead of batters early in the counts.

"It was also good to see Dunne come in and get some work in at the end. He came through after surrendering a walk but stepped up and found his groove."

The Tigers and Eagles (3-3) will back in action Monday, Feb. 24 at HIG Field on the campus of Campbellsville University. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. ET and Chris Tuma (0-1) will be making his second start of the season.
