Softball sweeps Bluefield in first MSC double-header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — In what will forever be known as the "Gasgate" series, Lady Tiger softball swept Bluefield in a MSC double-header today at Veterans Memorial Park, 2-0, 6-1.

Bluefield's 30-passenger bus ran out of gas in Springfield and the team limped in for the 2 p.m. opener at 2:09. A few minutes of warm-up and the teams agreed that the first game would only go five innings to ensure that both games could be completed before darkness.

Victoria Decker (5-2), after giving up a leadoff single to Kattie Evans in the first inning, was cruising until the top of the fifth. That's when she allowed two more hits. CU (13-3) had to overcome a throwing error to an uncovered base to complete the shutout. Decker did not walk a batter and struck out five.

Kristin Benton continued her torrid hitting, driving a first-inning homer over the center field fence. It turned out to be the only run Campbellsville would need. And that's probably a good thing because the Lady Tigers managed but one more hit off losing pitcher Anna Davis (0-1).

Shelby Ray was hit by a pitch in the first inning, stole second and scored on an error.

Heather Oakley had CU's only other hit, a single in the bottom of the third.

In game two, Kristin Benton went 3-for-3 with an RBI and CU led 4-0 through five innings before Keisha Sparks' solo homer off Courtney Turpin broke up the shutout.

Taylor Wroe  (5-0) pitched five innings, allowing five hits, two walks and striking out nine. Turpin allowed the one hit and struck out two of the three batters she faced. Martina Riney pitched the seventh, allowing a hit and striking out one.

Campbellsville had eight total hits, the three by Kristin Benton, and one each by Shelby Ray, Oakley (RBI), Sara Paragon (2RBI), Jordan (RBI) and Erin Benton.

Campbellsville continues Mid-South Conference play on Saturday, March 1 with a scheduled double-header with Pikeville. First pitch set for 1:00 at Veterans Memorial Park.
