Tigers rally after extra innings win, but settle for split at LWC

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Campbellsville collected an extra innings win, 3-2, to start the day, but lost the night cap, 8-4, to wrap up its Mid-South Conference opening series at No. 15 Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday.

Alex Kline led CU on the day with four hits, while Ricky McColloch had three hits and three RBIs. Carlos Torres also had three hits.

 



GAME 1 - Campbellsville 3, Lindsey Wilson 2

The Tigers rallied with a two-run 10th to take game one, 3-2. Ryan Squires, Jacob Russell and Alex Kline delivered one-out singles to get things going. Alex Scanlan later delivered a two-out single to drive in Squires and Russell to reclaim the lead.

Allen Hewey (1-1) gave up a lead-off double by Mark Silva to deep left-center and allowed the run to score after two wild pitches with one out. However, the senior reliever struck out Alex Bautista and got a fly ball from Jordan Berry to end the game.

Campbellsville took the lead in the top of the fifth when Steve Ferarro drove in Scanlan with a single to left. Scanlan drew a walk to start the inning. LWC answered in the sixth, as Derek Shugart collected a one-out single and scored on a sac fly by Berry on what would have been the third out of the inning, had it not been for an error at second during the previous at bat.

Starting pitchers Matt Robertson (CU) and Luke Shearrow (LWC) held batters at bay most of the game, as Robertson allowed one unearned run off four hits and two walks through eight innings, and Shearrow gave up one run off five hits and four walks. Both pitchers struck out six. Hewey took the win in relief, while Matt Lashlee (0-4) recorded the loss, giving up two runs off five hits in one inning of work.

 
GAME 2 – Lindsey Wilson 8, Campbellsville 4

The Blue Raiders wasted little time to get on the board in the second game, posting a two spot in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer by Bautista.

Bautista and LWC added another run in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to score Nick Hoffman. He finished the game hitting 3-for-3 with five RBIs after going 0-for-5 in game one.

Campbellsville played a little small ball in the fourth as Gentry Kinsella led off the inning with a single, followed by a bunt single by Jaime Valle. Carlos Torres, then doubled to left-center to drive in CU's first run, 3-1. Ricky McColloch pulled the Tigers within a run, 3-2, in the top of the fifth with a two-out solo home run.

LWC responded with a three-run bottom of the fifth, to extend its lead, 6-2.Bautista picked up his fourth RBI on a base hit to score Hoffman, and then Mitchell Osnowitz and Jeandro Andino also delivered RBI singles.
 


Campbellsville got back two of the runs in the sixth, 6-4, after Torres and Kline singled to start the inning. Scanlan singled in Torres with one out, and then McColloch drove in Kline, but CU left the bases loaded and go-ahead run on first after Kinsella lined out to Hoffman at first.

LWC insured its win in the bottom of the six with two more runs. Bautista walked with the bases loaded to score Hoffman, and Shugart scored on an RBI ground out by Berry.

CU loaded the bases once more in the top of the seventh. Ferraro and Torres collected back-to-back singles to start the inning, followed by a one-out single by Russell. Scanlan struck out looking and Shane Woodson, representing the tying run, hit into a fielder's choice to end the game. It was the fourth time in the weekend series CU left the bases loaded.

Jason Turner (2-2) recorded the win with six innings of work. He gave up four earned runs on nine hits and one walk. He struck out three. Brad Williams (1-1) started on the hill for CU and lasted only two innings, allowing three earned runs off three hits and a walk. Chris Tuma, TR Dunne, Alex Watson and Hewey all pitched in relief.

Campbellsville (6-6, 1-2 MSC) is scheduled to return to action Tuesday, March 4 at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.
