Tiger Baseball splits with WVU Tech

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Tiger Baseball stole game one from West Virginia Tech, 9-8 but dropped game two of the double header, 8-5 to keep Head Coach Beauford Sanders one game shy of the 1,000 career wins milestone.

Campbellsville (15-11, 5-4 MSC) and West Virginia Tech (7-9) both struggled on the defensive side combining for 10 errors in the two games.

The Tigers won game one on a game-winning suicide squeeze bunt by Gentry Kinsella. Game two was a different story, as starting pitcher Dexter Cline was chased after recording only one out and gave up four runs in the first inning and Campbellsville could not recover.

Game one - Campbellsville 9 West Virginia Tech 8

The Golden Bears jumped out in front early in the first game, picking up three runs in the second inning.

After a leadoff single and stolen base by Jayson Sykora, CU picked up back-to-back errors, as Ricky McColloch and Alex Scanlan could not handle ground balls.

WVU Tech played a little small ball and moved the two base runners up into scoring position and Sykora scored on a balk by CU starter Brad Williams.

The Golden Bears picked up consecutive RBI singles and jumped ahead 3-0.

The Tigers answered though and scored six runs after taking advantage of two WVU Tech errors and picked up four singles and a sacrifice fly. CU sent 12 hitters up to the plate with Scanlan redeeming himself with two singles and an RBI.

Tech answered in the top of the third though and cut the lead to one after scoring two runs, but the Tigers picked up a run in both the third and fourth innings after McColloch was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a Golden Bear error.

The Golden Bears made a game of it, though, after scoring a run in the sixth, they tied the game at eight in the seventh inning, but that set up Kinsella's suicide squeeze.

Jacob Russell picked up his second hit to lead off the bottom half of the seventh inning. McColloch attempted to advance him on a sacrifice bunt but another WVU Tech error set up CU with runners on first and second with zero outs.

Alex Gutierrez walked in the next plate appearance, and after a Golden Bears pitching change, Kinsella laid down a beautiful squeeze bunt for the game-winner.

TR Dunn (3-0) picked up the win from the bullpen after relieving Alex Watson in the seventh inning.

Kinsella, Kline, Scanlan and Russell all picked up two hits in the first game, with Russell and Ryan Squires leading the way with two RBIs each.

Game two - Campbellsville 5 West Virginia Tech 8

The second game of the twin bill went much like it did for Campbellsville in the first game. The Tigers surrendered three errors in consecutive fourth, fifth and sixth innings and could not overcome an early four spot WVU Tech put up in the first inning.

CU starting pitcher Dexter Cline recorded only one out in the first half inning and gave up four Tech runs.

Cline struck out the first batter of the game to record his only out but was hit pretty hard for a single, double and another single to put the Golden Bears in business. Cline then walked another batter, delivered a wild pitch and surrendered another single before Alex Watson replaced the freshman southpaw.

The Golden Bears added two more runs in the third inning before Campbellsville answered with two runs in the fourth.

Carlos Torres singled and Alex Kline doubled to lead off the fourth. Alex Scanlan grounded out to put CU on the board and Jacob Russell would give the Tigers another run on an RBI single.

Campbellsville then scored a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but could not keep WVU Tech off the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the comeback.

Torres led CU going 4-for-4 in the second game and 5-for-8 in the twin bill. Alex Kline was the only other Tiger with more than one hit in the second game. Russell once again led CU with two RBIs to push his total up to team leading 22 on the year.

Campbellsville will now travel to Mid-South Conference foe, No. 10 Cumberland University. The Tigers and Bulldogs will square off for one game on Friday at 3 p.m. ET. The two will play in a double header on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. ET.
