Tiger baseball splits with Shawnee State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — After the weekend series between CU and Shawnee State was moved to a Sunday afternoon doubleheader, the Tigers and Bears split on the sunny afternoon at HIG Field. Shawnee State won game one 5-4 and Campbellsville defeated the Bears in game two, 5-0.

Shawnee State freshman Derek Moore (6-1) allowed only three runs on seven hits in eight innings of work and picked up the win for the Bears. Teammate Mason Wisner (4) came in to close out the game in the ninth to preserve the SSU win.

Campbellsville's Matt Robertson (SR/Valley, Wash.) (3-3) picked up the loss after throwing six innings, giving up four runs on nine hits and striking out six. Alex Watson (SO/Henderson, Nev.) and TR Dunne (JR/Bartonville, Ill.) also saw pitching action in relief as Watson struggled in his appearance, giving up three hits and not picking up an out. Dunne finished the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and zero runs.

Gentry Kinsella (JR/Gilbert, Ariz.), Alex Scanlan (JR/Aztec, N.M.) and Ryan Squires (JR/Elizabethtown, Ky) all picked up RBIs in the first game to lead the Tigers.

Game one - Shawnee State 5, Campbellsville 4

Shawnee State jumped on the board first in the second inning after Robertson picked up two quick outs. He surrendered a single, stolen base and an RBI single by Dustin Bickmeyer to give SSU a 1-0 lead.

Campbellsville struck back, though, in the bottom of the fourth inning and scored three runs with one out. Jacob Russell (JR/Lawrenceburg, KY) and Alex Kline (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) picked up one-out singles and scored on a single by Alex Scanlan.

Scanlan drove a ball right over the head of the shortstop Brady Paige but left fielder Ryan Queener was able to cut it off and hold Russell and Kline to advance one base. But Queener slipped in the soggy outfield, allowing Russell to score. Kline ended up attempting to advance to third and Bickmeyer's throw sailed into left field allowing Kline to score and Scanlan ended up advancing all the way to third base.

Squires picked up a sacrifice fly on the next pitch to put CU up 3-1 in the fourth inning.

Shawnee State jumped back to a 4-3 lead in the fifth, as Robertson could not hold down the Bear offense, surrendering three runs on four hits.

SSU was able to add another run in the top of the seventh after Watson took over on the mound. The sophomore southpaw picked up two quick outs but gave up three straight hits and the Bears picked up an insurance run, now leading 5-3.

The Tigers pitching staff struggled throughout the opening game. In five of the nine innings, CU pitchers got two quick outs but SSU would either pick up a walk or a hit and scored its runs in two of the three innings with two outs.

Campbellsville rallied in the final inning after Zak Esposito entered to close out the game. But the righty could not record a out and threw eight straight balls to put CU on the bases without any outs.

Wisner entered the game after playing first base through the first eight innings. Alex Gutierrez (JR/Peoria, Ill.) attempted a sacrifice bunt but it turned into a base hit as the ball traveled to "no-man's land". Gentry Kinsella grounded into a fielders choice scoring Levi McCamish (JR/Eastview, Ky.) from third base but Carlos Torres (JR/Maracaibo, Venezuela) grounded into a game-ending 5-4-3 double play to end the Tiger rally.

Game two – Campbellsville 5, Shawnee State 0

The Tiger sticks came alive in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Senior southpaw Bret DeRooy (SR/Duvall, Wash.) (3-3) started on the mound for the Tigers and picked up the complete game victory. DeRooy gave up only five hits and struck out three SSU batters in the win.

Cody Strayer (3-5) also went the distance for Shawnee State, giving up four earned runs on eight hits and striking out three in the loss.

Campbellsville picked up crooked numbers in the first and third innings and that was all it needed to preserve the series split.

The Tigers started early in the first inning, picking up two runs on two hits and Shawnee State, which came in second in the Mid-South Conference with a .960 fielding percentage, gave up two errors, aiding CU.

CU picked up three runs in the third inning after a hit-by-pitch and three two-out singles by Squires, Scanlan and Jaime Valle.

Shawnee State (19-17, 8-6 MSC) picked up just three more hits after the third inning but the Bear base runners never got past second base.

Ryan Squires led the Tigers offensive attack, going 3-for-6 in the two games and drove in four runs. Alex Kline was the only other Tiger picking up a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 in the second game.

Campbellsville (17-14, 7-7 MSC) will host Union College (Ky.) on Wednesday with a single game starting at 6 p.m. ET. You can follow the action live on 88.7 WLCU and also on Stretch Internet, HERE.
