Rio steals game one, but LTS run rules RedStorm in finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Softball dropped game one of today's make-up doubleheader with the University of Rio Grande, 2-1. But the Lady Tigers found their groove in game two, winning by way of run rule, 8-0 in six innings.

GAME ONE: Rio Grande 2, Campbellsville 1

Starting pitcher Victoria Decker (10-5) fell victim to poor offensive production from the Lady Tigers. The former 2013 Mid-South Conference Freshman of the Year went 5 1/3 innings, while only giving up two runs on five hits. Decker also walked one and struck out four in the loss.

Campbellsville picked up its lone run in the first game with a little help by two Rio Grande errors.

Alyssa Barker led off the fifth inning with a single and Kristin Benton also singled with one out to put runners on first and second. Shelby Ray's routine ground ball to third was bobbled and Ariel Roder's errant throw scored Barker from second to put CU up 1-0.

But the RedStorm answered in the bottom half with the tying and go-ahead runs.

Decker surrendered a single and a one-out triple to score Rio's Haley Gwin from first, tying the game. But Rio wasn't finished; After a strikeout, leadoff hitter Cheyenne Hamaker delivered the go-ahead and what turned out to be the game winning run, 2-1.

During Decker's first eight MSC games this season, the Lady Tiger offense scored 3.6 runs a game. But in the second game of the conference doubleheaders senior pitcher Taylor Wroe is getting a little more run support at 5.8 runs per game.

Adrean Jordan was the only Lady Tiger with multiple hits in the first game, going 2-for-3.

GAME TWO: Campbellsville 8, Rio Grande 0

Campbellsville scored five runs in the fifth inning and completed the run rule with two runs in the top of the sixth. Two-time MSC Pitcher of the Week, Taylor Wroe (10-1), went five innings before being relieved by fellow senior Martina Riney. Wroe finished allowing one hit and striking out eight Rio batters.

Heather Oakley led the offensive charge in game two with three hits in four at bats and scored two runs. Junior Sara Paragon chipped in with a multiple hit game, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Shelby Ray and Adrean Jordan also had two hits on the day going, 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.

Kristin Benton (1 RBI) and Alyssa Barker (2 RBIs) both picked up one hit in the victory.

The scoring started in the third inning after Brittany Rippy bunted and reached on a Rio error. After a wild pitch, Rippy advanced to second and scored after Kristen Benton singled to left-center field.

The big inning, though, came in the fifth, as Ray started the rally with a one-out single. She swiped her team-leading eighth stolen base of the season and advanced to third on a single by Oakley, who advanced to second on another RedStorm error.

Ray ended up scoring after Paragon used a "beautiful" suicide squeeze bunt that turned into a base hit. After Kristin Benton was hit by a pitch loading the bases, Alyssa Barker delivered a two-out two-RBI double.

Later in the inning, Kristin Benton and Barker both ended up scoring on a misplayed pop-up and wild pitch by Rio Grande, putting CU up 6-0.

Campbellsville picked up four consecutive base hits to score two more runs in the top of the sixth. Riney pitched a perfect sixth inning to complete the CU run rule.

The Lady Tigers (25-9 12-4 MSC) will now make the short trip to southern Ohio and face Shawnee State University (15-10, 7-7 MSC) tomorrow afternoon. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET and you can follow the game live on Dakstats, HERE!
