Lady Tiger swimming gains another Top 16 relay finish

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Another freestyle relay earned points for Campbellsville University women's swimming Friday, as the Lady Tigers advanced to evening finals and finished 16th in the 200 free relay. The win gives CU two more team points, as the Lady Tigers sit in 21st place overall.

Thursday, CU also placed 16th in the 800 free relay.

CU started the day with a 16th place preliminary finish 200-yard freestyle relay to earn a spot in the finals. The Lady Tigers shaved .63 of a second off their time to finish in 1:45.15. Jessica Cook started the relay with a 50-yard time of 27.35, followed by Emily Hunter (25.57), Bailey Foxworth (24.69) and Shelby Mattingly (24.69).

CU switched its order a bit in the finals, starting the relay with Bailey Foxworth, who swam a 26.18 50-yard split. Cook improved on her prelim split, posting a split of 26.82 in the finals, but Hunter had a near two-second increase at 27.50. Mattingly anchored the relay with a 25.04 split.

Foxworth and Mattingly also competed in individual events during the morning preliminaries. Foxworth competed in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing 19th with a time of 5:14.83. She reach the NAIA Championships with a B standard time in the 400 IM and chose to swim the event above her other B standards.

Mattingly swam her second of three individual events for the weekend, and finished 34th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.44.

CU closed its preliminary round with the 400-yard medley relay. The Lady Tigers dropped six seconds off its entry time to finish with a time of 4:28.06, but it was 20th among the 21 teams. Jenna Rueff, Hunter, Foxworth and Mattingly swam the relay.

"Both relays did very well with time improvements in both. I was really excited about seeing the 200 free relay reach the finals," said CU head coach Casey Smith. "Neither Bailey or Shelby were able to improve in their individual events this morning, but it was great to have them in the water. Swimming at nationals is such a great experience."

Campbellsville will return to the water Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CST for the final preliminary round with the 1650 free for Foxworth, 100 free for Mattingly and the 400 free relay.

Prior to the finals, senior Kyle Perkins was named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete. The honor is awarded to student-athletes who are at least a junior of academic standing with a 3.5 grade point average or higher.
