Box Score ST. CATHARINE, Ky. -- Stranded runners plagued both sides of the diamond Saturday, as Campbellsville University dropped a Mid-South Conference game at St. Catharine College, 1-0.

The Tigers left two runners in scoring position in both the top of the first and top of the eighth innings. On the other side though, St. Catharine also struggled to find a timely hit most of the day, standing 11 runners in all.
St. Catharine took advantage of a few walks and one hit per inning by starting pitcher Bret DeRooy to put two runners on in both the third and fourth innings, and then loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth. It was in the fifth that St. Catharine found the only run it needed, as Francisco Gonzalez singled up the middle with one out to score Harold Diaz, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
DeRooy hit two, walked one and gave up the RBI single in the inning to load the bases but then got two infield pop ups to get our of the jam,
CU collected its second hit of the game in the seventh on a leadoff hit by Alex Kline, however a strikeout and two ground outs ended the inning.
Steve Ferarro was hit by a pitch with one out in the eighth, and Gentry Kinsella singled and took second on a defensive indifference to put two in scoring position. The Tigers stranded two more though as Alex Scanlan grounded out to first and Carlos Torres hit a deep fly ball to center.
St. Catharine threatened again in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases once again, but DeRooy managed to get out of the inning. Jake McCoy retired the Tigers in order in the ninth for the save.
DeRooy went the distance for CU, giving up three walks and five hits in eight innings. He struck out five.
John Wener recorded the win for St. Catharine, pitching 7 1/3 innings, allowing two walks and three hits. He had six Ks. Nick Rosso was the only player to have multiple hits in the game, hitting 3-for-4 for the Patriots.
Campbellsville (7-8, 1-3 MSC) and St. Catharine (8-8, 3-1 MSC) will return to action Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at noon EDT.
