Tiger Baseball sweeps doubleheader at St. Catharine

ST. CATHARINE, Ky. – Campbellsville University bounced back from a 1-0 loss Saturday with two one-run victories Sunday to win its Mid-South Conference series at St. Catharine College.
 

 


GAME 1 – Campbellsville 2, St. Catharine 1

St. Catharine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth in game one with an RBI single by Ty Broady.

The Tigers responded with a two-run eighth to take its first lead of the weekend. Ricky McColloch drew a leadoff walk and Steve Ferraro reached safely on a sac bunt error to put two on. After Gentry Kinsella moved the runners into scoring position. Alex Scanlan and Carlos Torres each plated a run with a ground out.

Allen Hewey took over the mound in the ninth for the Tigers, giving up a leadoff single, but then retiring the side for the save.

Matt Robertson picked up the win, holding the Patriots to one run despite giving up eight hits. He struck out three and did not give up a walk.

Trenton Claunch recorded the los in relief after Andrew Nelson allowed only two hits through seven for the Patriots. Jacob Russell and Ferraro had the only hits for CU.


GAME 2 – Campbellsville 3, St. Catharine 2

Game two was more back-and-forth than the previous two games on the weekend. Campbellsville carried its momentum into the second game, collecting a leadoff single from Kinsella, who later scored on a one-out hit by Torres to give CU a 1-0 lead in the first.

St. Catharine tied it in the second when Adrian Garcia singled to start he inning and scored on an RBI ground out by Eric Standafer.

Both teams added a run in the third to remain tied, 2-2.

Torres ripped a two-out single and scored on a two-out double by Alex Kline, and then in the bottom of the inning, Cody Kollenberg drew a leadoff walk and scored on a ground out by Nick Rosso.

CU worked in the eventual winning run in the top of the fifth.  McColloch doubled to deep right and moved to third on a sac bunt by Shane Woodson. Kinsella pushed a sac squeeze to drive in the go-ahead run, 3-2.

Hewey took over in the seventh after starting pitcher Kline gave up a single after a long at bat by Danny Jimenez.

The senior reliever did give up a wild pitch and walk to put the go-ahead run on first, but got a pop fly to end the game for his second save of the weekend and season.

Kline, Torres and McColloch led CU with two hits each.


Campbellsville (9-8, 3-3 MSC) is scheduled to return to action Monday with a nine-inning game at Brescia University.
