LTS seals season sweep over St. Catharine

SPRINGFIELD, Ky.  — Campbellsville softball extended its win streak to nine games and swept the season series against St. Catharine College on Friday, 1-0 and 4-0.



 

Kate Black delivered an RBI single in the top of the seventh of game one, scoring Zatoria Leavell from second base. In game two, CU picked up all the runs it would need in the first inning, as Kristin Benton led off with a home run and Taylor Wroe shut down the St. Catharine bats.

 

GAME ONE: CAMPBELLSVILLE 1, ST. CATHARINE 0 - BOX SCORE

 

The Lady Tigers (35-15, 22-10 MSC) barely survived the first game of the double header. CU only recorded two hits but none bigger than the one in the seventh inning by Black.

 

Shelby Ray picked up the other lone hit in the fourth inning but was stranded on second base after Heather Oakley was able to move her over on a sacrifice bunt.

 

Victoria Decker (14-8) shut down the Patriots in the pitcher's circle. The sophomore from Leitchfield, Ky., picked up her 14th victory of the season blanking St. Catharine (14-23, 10-18 MSC), going seven innings, surrendering three hits and striking out nine batters.

 

Krystal Cammuse (5-10) shut down CU in the first six innings but gave up a crucial hit-by-pitch to get Campbellsville going in the seventh. Cammuse finished with seven innings pitched and gave up one run and struck out five batters.

 

GAME TWO: CAMPBELLSVILLE 4, ST. CATHARINE 0 - BOX SCORE

 

Campbellsville woke its bats up in the second game and smacked three home runs to give starter Taylor Wroe all she would need in the pitcher's circle.

Kristin Benton drilled her team-leading 14th home run over the left field fence and kickstarted the second-straight shutout for CU.

 

Campbellsville stayed with the long ball in the fourth inning, as Sara Paragon and Adrean Jordan went back-to-back to lead off the inning.

 

The Lady Tigers picked up an insurance run in the seventh inning. Erin Benton started it off with a lead off walk and Shelby Ray moved her over on a sacrifice bunt to set up an RBI single by Sara Paragon.

 

Wroe (15-2) had a career-day against the Patriots. The senior from Hawesville, Ky., out-did Decker in the circle and took back the team-lead with 15 victories. Wroe struck out a career-high 13 batters in seven innings of work and did not walk a Patriot in her third shutout of the season.

 

Paragon led the way for CU in game two, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. K. Benton, Jordan, E. Benton, Markie Smith and Brittany Rippy all picked up singles in the second game.

 

Campbellsville will now make its final road trip of the regular season to University of Pikeville and Bluefield College. The Lady Tigers will play UPike on Friday, April 25 with a double-header starting at 1 p.m. ET. On Saturday, CU will play Bluefield College with the double-header starting at 12 p.m. ET.
