Baseball can't hold down No. 7 Georgetown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Campbellsville Tiger Baseball could not put a full game together on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball Saturday and Georgetown College took advantage to sweep CU with two wins, 13-6 and 8-5.

Campbellsville and Georgetown went back and fourth in the second game of the series (game one of Saturday's doubleheader). But Georgetown  capitalized again on the CU defensive miscues. Edwin Santiago put the game out of reach in the fifth inning with a grand slam home run.

CU and GC were all knotted up in game two but Georgetown uncorked the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with three extra base hits and an intentional walk in the middle of them all, scoring three runs to take an 8-5 win.

Georgetown came into the game ranked No. 1 in the NAIA with an earned run average (ERA) of 2.30 but Campbellsville scored its fair share of runs in the series. CU scored 21 total runs in the series, which was the most it has scored in a conference series this season.

GAME ONE: No. 7 Georgetown 13, Campbellsville 6 - BOX SCORE

Georgetown College clinched its first-ever Mid-South Conference regular-season championship with the 13-6 victory.

The sloppy defense started in the first inning for the visiting Tigers. After a one-out single, Tyler Coker grounded a ball to second baseman Gentry Kinsella for a routine double play. But the sure-handed second baseman bobbled and had to settle for a fielder's choice.

The next batter, Martin Lemus, collected his ninth home run to give GC a 2-0 lead and put Campbellsville behind early.

CU was able to score four runs in the second inning and took a brief lead before the bottom half of the frame. It all started with a leadoff single by Jaime Valle. But Georgetown got a little sloppy and surrendered another single and two errors to score three runs, 3-2.

CU extended its lead to, 4-2, on a suicide squeeze by Kinsella scoring Ricky McColloch from third.

Georgetown took advantage of CU's inconsistent defense and depleted pitching staff and batted around in the bottom half. The home Tigers picked up a few timely hits to recapture the lead, 6-4 off CU starter, Chris Tuma.

Command was an issue for pitchers on both sides of the diamond, as six of the seven pitchers for both teams walked at least one batter. The first game saw a total of 24 free bases given up (12 walks, eight HBPs and four errors).

Tuma (4-3) gave up four free passes and saw his day cut short in the third inning. Freshman Dexter Cline took over in only his second appearance from the bullpen with runners on first and second. He hit his first batter faced to load the bases, but struck out two before hitting one more and tossing a wild pitch to give Georgetown two more runs and an 8-5 lead.

Cline pitched a scoreless fourth but the dagger came after retiring the first two Georgetown batters in the fifth.Carlos Torres dropped a routine fly ball in left field and Georgetown ended up scoring five runs after the two-out error. Four of the five runs came on one swing, as Santiago drilled his first career grand slam and recorded his first multi-RBI game.

Campbellsville scored one run in the ninth inning but was unable to make a comeback.

Jacob Russell and Alex Kline continued their strong hitting, both going 3-for-4 and 2-for-4, respectively. Alex Scanlan and McColloch both picked up two hits in the game two loss.

Kinsella, Jaime Valle and Steve Ferraro all recorded one hit.

GAME TWO: No. 7 Georgetown 8, Campbellsville 5 - BOX SCORE

Campbellsville seemed to put the previous game behind them early in the third game. The Tigers picked up four hits in the first inning, three of which were extra base hits, and took a 3-0 lead.

But CU could not hold No. 7 Georgetown down long. The home Tigers scored two runs in each the second and third innings to recapture the lead, 4-3.

Alex Kline delivered for his team once again and tied the game at four with an RBI single to center field scoring Gentry Kinsella from second base.

CU wasn't finished, as John Ingram pinch ran for Kline and advanced to third base on a single by Jaime Valle. GC's shortstop, Steven Mancilla, went ahead and made a late throw to first base but it went wide, scoring Ingram from third base, 5-4.

After two quick outs by CU reliever TR Dunne, he surrendered a walk and a run scoring double by Tyler Coker to knot it all up at five.

Kline then made the move from first base to the picher's mound and Georgetown showed why it is the seventh-ranked team in the nation.

Campbellsville did not go away in its final at bat. The CU Tigers picked up two singles and a walk to load the bases and place the tying run on first but Georgetown picked up a fielder's choice at second to end the game and seal the sweep.

Torres and Valle both hit 3-for-4. Kline picked up another multiple hit game, going 2-for-4. Kinsella, Russell, Ferraro, Scanlan and Shane Woodson all picked up singles in the loss.
