Box Score 2 BLUEFIELD, Va. – Campbellsville University Softball swept its final two games of the regular season Saturday, April 26 to stretch its win streak to 13 games entering next week's Mid-South Conference tournament. The Lady Tigers picked up their 11th MSC sweep of the year with 9-1 and 2-1 victories.
Game 1 – Campbellsville 9, Bluefield 1
CU found success early, putting up a lone run in the top of the first. A walk to Shelby Ray was all it took, as the sophomore stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ray was eventually batted in on a sacrifice fly to center field from Adrean Jordan.
After going hitless in the second inning, Campbellsville picked up two more runs in the third to go up 3-0. Brittany Rippy led off with a single to right-center and advanced to second when Kristin Benton reached on a walk. Both batters advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Ray. A sacrifice fly from Oakley to center scored Rippy and moved Benton to third. Jordan then drove Benton in for the second run of the inning with a single to left-center.
The Lady Tigers plated two insurance runs in the top of the fourth, giving CU a comfortable 5-0 lead. Kate Black led off the inning with a single to shallow right and advanced to second with a base hit bunt from Markie Smith. Black scored on the play off a wild throw from Bluefield, putting Smith in scoring position at third. Smith scored on a 4-3 groundout hit by Rippy.
Campbellsville was hitless in the fifth before blowing things wide open in the sixth. Reagan Kingrey led off the inning with a double to left-center. Head coach Shannon Wathen elected to utilize the speed of LTS reserve Zatoria Leavell to pinch run for Kingrey at second. Alyssa Barker pinch hit for Black and booked a double of her own to score Leavell and make it 6-0.
Rippy reached first on a base hit bunt that advanced both runners. Smith scored off a fielder's choice hit by K. Benton and Rippy advanced to third on a wild throw, but Barker was thrown out on a play at the plate. Rippy eventually scored on an RBI single by Ray to left to make it 8-0 with hopes of ending the game by mercy rule.
After five shutout innings in the circle for the Lady Tigers, Courtney Turpin relieved the starter Victoria Decker in the bottom of the sixth. Decker gave up just two hits and finished the contest with six strikeouts and one walked batter, giving her a 16-8 record on the year.
Bluefield extended the game with its lone run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out homer to left field. It was matched however in the first pitch of the seventh inning when Jordan homered to center giving CU its final run of the inning, CU 9-1.
Turpin recorded a strikeout and only gave up one hit during her two innings of work in the circle. Campbellsville finished the game with 10 hits as a team and one error.
Game 2 – Campbellsville 2, Bluefield 1
After a lopsided game one, the next game proved to be different. Taylor Wroe started in the circle in game two for Campbellsville and pitched a shutout through 6 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits in her 17th win of the year (17-2).
Campbellsville plated its first run in the top of the third when the Lady Tigers led the inning off at the top of the lineup. Kristin Benton singled up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Ray. Benton moved to third on a 4-3 groundout and was batted in on a double to deep left-center hit by Adrean Jordan for CU's first run.
Wroe shut down the side in the bottom of the third and Campbellsville scored again in the top of the fourth. Reagran Kingrey led off the inning with a single to right and Alyssa Barker followed suit with a single to right. Kingrey scored on a misplayed ground ball by the Bluefield right fielder, making it 2-0 CU.
Martina Riney come in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh to replace Wroe. Bluefield led off with a double to left field and went on to produce three hits from pinch hiters in the inning, scoring one. Wroe returned to the circle with two outs in the inning to strikeout the final Bluefield batter in the leadoff position.
With the sweep, Campbellsville (39-15, 26-10) will enter the Mid-South Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will play Shawnee State University in the first round on Wednesday, April 30 at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky. Game time is to be announced.
