MARION, N.C. — Campbellsville University women's soccer shut out Montreat College, 2-0, Friday evening at Grace Corpening Memorial YMCA for the Lady Tigers' first season-opening win since 2005.
"What a way to start the season," said Thom Jones, who is in his seventh season as CU head coach. "I am very proud of my team and how they performed tonight."
After the games were delayed due to weather, both teams started their season slowly.
Going into halftime scoreless, freshman Madison Ratchford delivered the first goal of the 2014 season in the 54th minute to put CU on top.
Campbellsville gained a 2-0 cushion in the 77th minute. Chelsea Gill found the back of the net for her third career goal off a corner kick by Aris Kuntz.
Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Howard had seven saves in her first collegiate shutout. Montreat goalkeeper Melina Wilkinson had 10 saves.
Campbellsville (1-0) will play Truett-McConnell College (0-0-1) tomorrow afternoon with kickoff slated to start at 3 p.m. ET. Truett-McConnell tied Cornerstone University in its season opener earlier Friday.
