CU holds on down stretch, wins 2-1 over Lady Bears

MARION, N.C — Campbellsville women's soccer picked up its second straight victory to start 2014, as the Lady Tigers defeated Truett-McConnell College, 2-1.

Madison Ratchford and Mhairi Fyfe scored the two goals for Campbellsville (2-0), while Maddy Clark picked up her second goal in as many games for Truett-McConnell (0-1-1).

Campbellsville's first half was much like it was yesterday. Truett-McConnell was much more physical and played at a faster pace, which caught the Lady Tigers off guard.

Ratchford, a freshman from Taylorsville, Ky., picked up her second goal in as many games to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead.  But the high-pressure offense from the Lady Bears got to the young Campbellsville team.

"Truett-McConnell played their game in the first half and narrowed the field," said head coach Thom Jones. "We were not applying pressure to them, they were putting the pressure on our defense."

Jones' and his Lady Tigers made a big adjustment at the half that proved dividends.

"We started forcing them wide to shrink the field," said Jones. "They started to make their own mistakes and we didn't have to chase them around the entire field anymore."

Fyfe extended the Campbellsville lead, 2-0, just a few minutes into the second half. But the Lady Bears kept applying pressure to the CU back line.

Despite Clark's goal to cut the Campbellsville lead in half, the Lady Tigers held strong down the stretch.

"We have a lot of work to do this week," said Jones. "But overall I am pleased with the girls and their effort.

With the victory, Campbellsville has won the first two games of the season for the first time since 2005.

The Lady Tigers have a week off before returning home to host Indiana Wesleyan University at 7 p.m. The game will be played at CU's Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field.
