Tigers drop NCCAA Top 10 battle at Lee, 4-1

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Thursday night's NCCAA Top 10 battle went to the home team, as Lee University used two quick goals at the start of each half to beat Campbellsville, 4-1.

The Tigers (7-4) entered the game ranked No. 10 in NCCAA Division I, while Lee (4-2-1) is ranked No. 4. The game was a rematch of last year's NCCAA Mid-East Region championship game, which CU won 2-1, but Lee went on to finish runner-up at the national tournament.

Lee scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game, starting with a goal by Justin Furey in the second minute, assisted by Barrett Mills. Mills collected a second assist at the 10 minute mark, connecting with Quade Marinell to set up a David Perez goal.

Campbellsville held Lee scoreless the rest of the half and did not allow another shot on goal in the remaining 35 minutes before halftime. The Tigers collected four shots on goal and nine total shots in the first half, but was unable to get past the home keeper Tom Halsall.

The Flames wasted little time extending their lead after the break, as Quade Marinell finished a Robbie Cutchin cross just 55 seconds into the second half. Marinell assisted Perez less than a minute later to make it 4-0.

Marcelo Petit put the Tigers on the board in the 70th minute, heading in a corner kick from Ross Lindsay.

Josh Hollis finished with only one save for the Tigers before exiting the game in the 73rd minute. Nestor Escobar stopped the Flames' only other shot on goal in the final 17 minutes of play.

Petit and Roraigh Yearwood each had three shots saved by Halsall, who finished with eight saves. Ryan Foster and Alex Higdon had CU's other shots on goal.

Campbellsville will take a week off from competition before returning home Wednesday, Oct. 8 to host St. Catharine College in a Mid-South Conference game at 8 p.m. EDT.
