Volleyball blanked on first day of Viterbo Tournament

LaCrosse, Wisc. — If playing good competition makes you better, then Campbellsville did some growing up today. In a 48-hour span, Lady Tiger Volleyball faced two top 15 teams, going 0-2 against Georgetown and Viterbo.

But Clarke University proved a national ranking unnecessary, dispatching Campbellsville in three sets in the opener for both squads in the Viterbo University Volleyball Tournament.

LTV met No. 15 Viterbo in the hour-late, Parent Night finale, and, although showing some signs of life, eventually lost 25-14, 25-20 and 25-20.

"We played better tonight," said coach Amy Zink. "If we can just continue to improve."

Clarke University 3, Campbellsville 0

25-13, 25-17 and 25-22

The Crusaders (5-2) scored the first nine points of the first set and never looked back, taking set scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-22.

Campbellsville (2-3, 0-1 MSC) found its footing in set three, but could not get over the hump after tying the score 20-all. Clarke won five of the next seven points.

In set two, Clarke went on an 8-2 run from a 9-9 tie and distanced itself enough to cruise to an easy win.

Marcella Compeau had 14 digs and four aces in the match. Annija Abolina and Jackie Schwieger led in kills and assists with seven and 14, respectively.

Viterbo 3, Campbellsville 0

25-14, 25-20 and 25-20

In the first two sets, Viterbo (12-1) ran off to big early leads that eventually led to the Lady Tigers' undoing.

Trailing 6-0 in set one, CU (2-4, 0-1 MSC)) tied it at 13-all only to see the Hawks slip in another 6-0 run and won going away, 25-14.

In set two, Campbellsville would again make in close … this time 20-19. An ace by Annija Abolina closed the gap to one, but an ensuing service error gave Viterbo the momentum it would need to close out the set, 25-20.

Campbellsville led 3-0 in the final set, and but for allowing another 6-0 run by the Hawks made it interesting when Abolina had another ace at 23-19.

Jana Kortas had a match-high 10 kills while Abolina and Brianna Harman had seven apiece. Abolina had three aces. Marcella Compeau had 22 digs and Jackie Schwieger (19) and Krista Mihelsone (6) shared 28 assists. Harman was credited with three blocks,

Campbellsville has a 10 a.m. match with Bellevue on Saturday and play again at 2:00 with Haskell University to close out its four matches in the Viterbo University Volleyball Tournament.
