Five Lady Tigers place at McKendree's Bearcat Open

LEBANON, Ill. - Five of 10 Lady Tigers placed in the Top 8 Saturday as Campbellsville University women's wrestling returned to the mats at the McKendree University Bearcat Open.

The open tournament was CU's first competition since finishing fourth at National Duals two weeks ago. It's the final Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) event before the WCWA National Championships in St. Louis, Mo., Feb. 13-14.

Hanna Hall led the way for Campbellsville with a second-place finish at 155 pounds. Hall tech'd her way into the semifinals, and then beat Oklahoma City University's Yvonne Galindo, 8-3, to advance to the finals. She fell short in the title bought, 6-1, to Lindenwood University's Lisa Gonzalez.

Autumn Rux and Kaitlyn Hill each placed at 170 pounds, with Rux placing fourth, the second highest finish for CU during the open. Both received byes before losing in the quarterfinals. Rux wrestled back with three pins in times of 1:00, 0:26 and 1:00 to reach the third-place match, but was stuck in the second round by University of the Cumberlands' Clarc Walker in 2:08. Hill pinned her first consolation opponent, before dropping into the seventh-place match, and then pinned Rebecka Winton of Cumberlands in a minute.

Cassidy Ferrell faced Marina Doi of King University in the quarterfinals of the seven-woman, 101-pound  bracket. Doi tech'd Ferrell, 10-0, and went on to not allow a single point in the next two matches en route to her 101-pound title. Ferrell bounced to beat Missouri Baptist's Maria Ahumada, 7-2, but fell by tech fall in the consolation semifinals and fifth-place match to finish sixth overall.

Stephanie Hampton recorded her first pin in her Campbellsville career, sticking Missouri Valley's Samantha Higa in one minute in the 130-pound second round. She avoided a tech fall to MVC's Jacarra Winchseter, but fell 9-0, to drop to the consolation bracket. There, she tech'd Menlo's Dionica Tolliver, 14-2, but was tech'd by Oklahoma City's Carla Ponce. She beat Diana Nevarez of McKendree, 14-8, to finish seventh.

Makayla Bushman and Abby Sallee also wrestled for CU, competing at 123 pounds. Hannah Gladden and Shelby Hall both competed at 136 pounds. Gladden and Hall matched up in the consolation bracket, with Gladden posting an 11-0 tech fall. She added a pin to finish 2-2 on the day, but fell short of the placement rounds. Cheyenne Duran competed 143 pounds.

CU will take a two week break from WCWA competition before the national championships. Some CU wrestlers will compete in the USA Wrestling Dave Schultz International the first weekend of February, host at the USA Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
