Lady Tigers fall to St.Catharine in four sets

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - The Lady Tigers couldn't overcome 29 errors to beat Mid-South Conference foe St. Catharine College during this year's annual Dig Pink night.

Campbellsville (11-9, 3-4 MSC) lost in four sets in front of a packed Powell Athletic Center to SCC who is receiving points in the NAIA poll, 16-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18.

To open the match, SCC claimed the first three points and the Lady Tigers would never gain the lead. The Patriots went on a 12-5 run to end the first set.

Campbellsville opened the second set off a SCC service error. The Lady Tigers and Patriots had eight ties in thr set with the teams tied at 14-all. But St. Catharine went on a 5-1 run forcing CU to call two timeouts within three points. The Patriots used a 4-0 run to close out set two.

The Lady Tigers took advantage of the Patriots opening errors in the third set and never looked back. St. Catharine tied the score seven times but never led. Three of the last four points were scored off a Jana Kortas kill. CU used 19 kills and only four errors to win the third set.

The fourth set was full of small runs but never large enough to capture the lead for the Lady Tigers. During a 5-0 run CU used back-to-back aces from Inoa Fields forcing the Patriots to call a timeout. CU fought to the last point but couldn't overcome SCC's .400 percent hitting average in the set.

The Lady Tigers were led by Kortas' 16 kills with Maria Coelho recording 13. Fields assisted on 43 kills.

The defense was led by Marcella Compeau's season-high of 20 digs. Chanel Raymundo recording the team's second best at 13.

Campbellsville will remain at the Powell Athletic Center as they host two matches against MSC foes next week. The Lady Tigers host No. 17 Georgetown College on Tuesday, Oct. 6. JV action starts at 5 p.m. ET with varsity to follow at 7 p.m. CU will face Shawnee State two days later on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. ET.
