Lady Tigers improve on Day 2, finish in fifth

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Lady Tiger wrestling was able to get nine team duals under their belts at the Patriots Duals on Saturday. Campbellsville's "A" team finished in fifth place in the Blue Bracket while the "B" team finished in in third place in the Red Bracket.

The "A" team, or the varsity team, started its day with a nail-biting loss to No. 3 Oklahoma City University, 24-20.

CU dominated the heavier weight classes, winning at 143, 155 and 170. After a forfeit in the 101lb weight class to give CU a 5-0 lead, Hannah Gladden got the Lady Tigers first victory on the mat winning 13-6. That kick-started a nine-point run, with Hanna Hall and Michelle Organ both winning 10-0 and via a pin, respectively.

The match came down to Jesse Grubbs at 191 but she fell just short, 5-4, giving the Stars the victory.

The varsity squad then fell in the consolation bracket and defeated OKC's JV squad, 32-16.  Ruby Ariosa, Kaitlyn Hill and Alexis Escamilla won by forfeits to give CU a 10-0 lead then the Lady Tigers picked up pins from Koral Sugiyama and Hanna Hall to seal the victory.

CU moved on to dual with No. 5 McKendree but fell, 30-14. CU's lone win came from Kaitlyn Hill at 170 via a forfeit.

Campbellsville's varsity then had another matchup with No. 4 Lindenwood to prove that Day 2 was going to be different from Day 1. CU set the tone early winning five of the first six matches. Ariosa, Rosemary Flores and Organ pinned their opponents to give CU 15 points. Kait Fitzpatrick and Shelby Hall both won close matches by one point and Sugiyama won with a tech fall to seal the victory.

"We wanted to face Lindenwood in the fifth place match," said CU coach Lee Miracle. "We wanted to prove we got better after Day 1 and learned from our mistakes and we were able to do that."

The Lady Tiger JV team wrestled in the Red Bracket and dominated their first match, 35-2 against Ferrum. CU had three wins by forfeits and three others by decision. Courtney Gray and Raquel Valderrama both made their presence known by recording pins in under 46 seconds.

CU fell to Life University's varsity team, 32-16, but then pulled off three wins in a row over Emmanuel, Life JV and University of the Cumberlands, to place third in the Red Bracket.

"We came into this tournament to get matches and we did that," said Miracle. "I walked away happy from the tournament and so did the team. We know where we are at and what we need to work on. The team is only running at about 75 percent with a few girls not wrestling this weekend. We wrestled well and had chances in every match. Just wait until we are 100 percent healthy and then we have the chance to be in the hunt for a national title."

Campbellsville is scheduled to get back on the mat on Saturday, Oct. 18 as they travel to Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga.
