Volleyball trips up Cumberlands in five sets

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Campbellsville ended a four-match skid tonight, tripping up the Cumberlands (Ky.) in five sets, 25-18, 13-25, 22-25, 25-19 and 15-8.

The Patriots were 5-1 in five-set matches until tonight as the Lady Tigers used some monster kills in the decisive fifth set by Annija Abolina to seal their fourth MSC victory in 10 tries.

Abolina led everyone with 18 kills, but received a variety of support. Jana Kortas collected 13 kills, Inoa Fields had a double-double with 45 assists and 14 digs and Marcella Compeau scratched out 22 digs. But one of the biggest stats was the combined 6.5 blocks from Julia Fonseca (3.5) and Mirela Vasconselos (3), all seemingly coming at crucial times.

Campbellsville (12-11, 4-6 MSC) was on script in set one, blowing out to an 18-9 lead and holding on at the end to take a 1-0 lead, 25-18. Abolina and Kortas shared eight kills in the set and CU finished with a hitting percentage of .211.

The hitting percentage seemed to be a determining factor in the match, because the Lady Tigers hit .088 and .097 in sets two and three, respectively, and lost both.

The Patriots (18-7, 5-6 MSC) ran away with set two and rallied from a one-point deficit in the third set, winning the last four points on consecutive kills by Samantha Stuckwisch for a 25-22 win.

In the fourth Campbellsville began to reassert itself at the net, outhitting UC .321 to .167. The Lady Tigers took control of the fourth jumping to leads of 9-6 and 21-13 before winning 25-19.

In the decisive fifth set, CU made a 5-2 run to tie it at 5-all and then closed the match on a 10-3 run.

Chanel Raymundo and Jessie Pendleton had 15 and 10 digs each and Vasconselos chipped in with six kills.

Morgan Schlater had 16 kills for Cumberlands and UC's Sydney Beck had 24 digs.

Campbellsville stays on the road when it travels to Pikeville (Ky.) on Thursday, Oct. 15. Junior varsity starts at 5 p.m. ET and varsity at 7 p.m.
