CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Lady Tigers almost waited too late to find their game tonight, but rode the double-digit kills of Jana Kortas, Annija Abolina and Chanel Raymundo to defeat Cumberland University in five sets, 23-25, 23-25, 25-17, 27-25, 15-7.Â
BOXSCORE
Campbellsville (14-11, 6-6 MSC) met Cumberland (Tenn.) (11-14, 6-7 MSC) for the 12th time tonight, having never dropped a match since 2009. Earlier this season the Lady Tigers traveled to Lebanon, Tenn. and beat the Bulldogs 3-1.
CU recorded 64 kills but compiled 51 from three different double-digit players to beat the Bulldogs in a late run that saw Campbellsville rally from a 2-0 deficit. Kortas recorded 19 kills. Abolina and Raymundo with 18 and 14, respectively, both tying game-highs.
Raymundo recorded the first double-double of her career, with 14 kills and 10 digs. Inoa Fields also recorded a double-double as she posted her season's second best, highs of 55 assists and 13 digs.
The first and second set looked much the same, rallying point-for-point tying 19-all. Both sets ended with 25-23 in favor of Cumberland. The Lady Tigers couldn't connect on a string of points to win either set.
Late in the third set, Campbellsville found the momentum they needed and went on a 7-0 run. That run was filled with two kills and a block from Abolina, two kills from Kortas, and topped with a service ace from Fields. The Bulldogs made a small 4-2 run at the end of the set but another kill from Kortas squashed their dreams of sweeping the Lady Tigers.
The fourth set was tied nine times, four of those coming within the last seven points. Campbellsville used a late 5-0 run to tie the set 21-all. Cumberland called a timeout but could not handle the heat from Abolina and Kortas, pushing the score to 24-22. The Bulldogs committed three errors in the last five points, and that got the crowd on their feet as Kortas used a kill to end the set.
The fifth set, Campbellsville led the entire time. Nine of the 15 points came from kills, combined for a .533 hitting percentage.
On the defensive end, Jessie Pendleton recorded 18 digs. Julia Fonseca recorded two solo blocks and helped on five others. Abolina had four assisted blocks as well.
