CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Lady Tigers rode the strong left arm of Jana Kortas into the fifth set but couldn't withstand a late rally by Shawnee State tonight in the Powell Athletic Center, losing 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 25-17,22-25, 12-15).
Campbellsville (11-11, 3-6 MSC) met Shawnee State (11-9, 3-7 MSC) for the 11
th time overall and the second time this season. Earlier this year, the Lady Tigers beat the Bears in four sets. Today's outcome was not the same.
In the third set, Kortas, a senior from Simpsonville, Ky., broke into the 1,000 kill club with her 16th slam of the match. In tonight's matchup she set a new career high of 33 kills and tied Teresa Masava for the second highest kills in a match. Masava set the record at 34 kills against IU Southeast on September 1, 2007 then a few days later set the second best at 33 kills against Spring Arbor University on September 15, 2007.
The Lady Tigers finished the first set on a 16-7 run after being down 15-9, using a a 4-0 run to end it. That 4-0 run included a kill from Mirela Vasconselos, a service ace from Marcella Compeau, a kill from Annija Abolina and for the final point a huge block from Inoa Fields.
In the middle of the second set, the Lady Tigers went on a 6-0 run and led 17-9 forcing SSU to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Bears went on an 11-3 run that the Lady Tigers couldn't contain and the Bears evened the score 22-22. The Lady Tigers would not score again in the set.
CU kept the third set interesting swapping runs with a Bears. CU jumped out on a 4-0 run early in the set, and SSU answered with a 7-3 run. But that's as far as the Lady Tigers would let them go. CU ended the set on a 10-3 run using a combination of game-changing blocks and kills.
In the fourth set the two teams juked it out, point for point. It wasn't until the 18-all mark where errors affected the outcome in a major way. SSU ended on a 6-3 run to end the fourth set 22-25, pushing the Lady Tigers into their second fifth-set match of the season.
The fifth set was full of emotion and long rallies for both teams. As the Bears jumped ahead 6-3 the Lady Tiger's called a quick timeout to regroup. CU rallied within 10-7 and called another timeout. But out of the timeout, SSU used a 3-0 run to jump up three points and the Lady Tigers wouldn't recover.
Kortas lead the way with a career-best 33 kills with Abolina and Chanel Raymundo adding 13 and seven, respectively. Kortas finished with a .467 hitting percentage. CU ended the match with 67 kills, more than any other match this season. Fields set a career high as well tonight with 57 assists.
On the defensive end, Compeau and Raymundo dug up 13 and 11 balls apiece.
The Lady Tigers will hit the road when they travel to receiving votes University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Junior varsity will start at 5 p.m. with varsity to follow at 7 p.m.
