PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The top-ranked Lady Tigers went on the road tonight to No. 16 Shawnee State and could not overcome a cold shooting performance, falling 72-62.
The Lady Tigers fall to 4-2 overall and 0-1 inside the Mid-South Conference while Shawnee State improves to 6-0 and 1-0 inside the conference. Tonight marks the first time CU has lost back-to-back games since they lost to University of the Cumberlands and Cumberland University in February 2013.
CU had won seven straight MSC openers with its last loss coming on Jan. 26, 2008 to Georgetown College in Ginger Colvin's first MSC matchup in her tenure.
Campbellsville finished hitting 35 percent (23-of-66) compared to 44 percent (24-of-55) for the Bears. Shawnee State had 22 assists on those 24 baskets while Campbellsville had only nine on its 23 makes. Â
SSU also knocked down 40 percent (10-of-25) from behind the arc while the Lady Tigers struggled only hitting 29 percent (5-of-17).
Emily Fox led the Lady Tigers with 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting while LeeAnn Grider finished with 12 points and Lindsey Burd scored 11.
Shawnee State had all five starters finish with double figures with reigning MSC Player of the Year and the MSC Player of the Week Ali Zieverink leading the way with 18 points. Ashton Lovely scored 17 and sparked the Bears, hitting 4-of-10 from behind the 3-point line.
The Bears took a 19-8 lead after the first quarter but the Lady Tigers started clawing their way back slowly in the second.
After being outscored 19-8, CU was able to return the favor to Shawnee State with a 27-15 run in the second quarter.
Campbellsville used a pair of 3-pointers from Fox and Madison Kaiser to cut the lead to one, 34-33, with 30 seconds remaining.
With six seconds left, LeeAnn Grider drove the lane and scored to give Campbellsville its first lead since the score was 3-2. Grider dropped 10 of her 12 points in the first half. Lady Tigers had a 35-34 lead at halftime.
The second half wasn't as nice to CU, as the Lady Tigers finished hitting only 28 percent from the floor. Shawnee State outscored CU 16-13 in the third quarter to take a 50-48 lead but then pushed the lead to 10 after an 8-0 run to start the fourth.
In the final quarter, the Bears scored 22 points compared to 14 for Campbellsville. Shawnee State led by as much as 12 points five different times in the fourth quarter but CU was unable to work the lead any lower than eight.
Shawnee State out-rebounded Campbellsville 47-32 but the Lady Tigers forced 21 Bear turnovers and scored 20 points off those mishaps. SSU scored 11 points off its 12 offensive rebounds. Â
