McKENZIE, Tenn. — Campbellsville kept its hopes of an extended postseason by defeating Bethel University tonight in four sets, 25-21, 21-25, 26-24 and 25-16.
The Lady Tigers lost in three sets to the Wildcats in their season-opening match on Aug. 26, but this time they were able to overcome some sloppy mid-match ball handling to improve to 17-12 overall and 8-7 Mid-South Conference. Bethel dropped to 20-9 and 11-3 in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
CU used four kills each by Jana Kortas and Annija Abolina in the first set to help build a 22-20 margin. Abolina carved in a service ace at 24-21 and Chanel Raymundo put the opening set away with a kill off the right side.
In set two, the Lady Tigers and Wildcats were tied 15-all but Bethel outscored Campbellsville 10-6 to get back in the match.
But in the third set, the Lady Tigers were able to erase an 18-10 deficit on a series of kills by Kortas, Abolina and Mirela Vasconselos. CU overtook the Wildcats at 25-24 and used Abolina's heavy hand for a 26-24 win.
Bethel seemed to lose focus in the fourth set as Campbellsville took advantage of a variety of errors from the home team and solid net play by Julia Fonseca to put the match away.
Kortas ended the match with 20 kills and was supported by Abolina and Fonseca with 11 and 10, rerspectively. Inoa Fields had 42 of the team's 50 assists and Raymundo had 19 digs to lead the team.
Campbellsville is back in competition on Saturday, Nov. 7 when it travels to Barbourville, Ky. for a couple of matches with Tennessee Wesleyan College (1:00) and Union College (4:00).
