Miracle qualifies for Olympic Trials at Bill Ferrell

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Campbellsville University wrestler Kayla Miracle qualified for the 2014 Kool-Aid Olympics and the 2016 Olympic Trials by virtue of her bronze medal performance this week at the Bill Farrell International Open.

Hosted this weekend by the New Your Athletic Club, Miracle won five matches in the 58kg weight class to bring home the bronze.

After defeating Cierra Carero 10-0 in the first round, Miracle then pinned Areana Villaesusa in 2:58. After taking down Maya Nelson in an 8-4 decision, Michelle Fazzari sent Miracle to the consolation bracket with a 6-2 decision. Miracle closed out her bracket with a tech fall over Jennifer Page and a 9-5 decision over Maya Nelson.

Five other CU wrestlers competed in New York, three others in the 58kg weight class and one each in the 63 and 69kg weight divisions.

58-KG: Rosemary Flores drew a bye in the opening round and then lost consecutive matches to Kelsey Campbell (9-0 decision) and Maya Nelson (fall 2:02). She then beat fellow teammate Shelby Hall (fall 5:55)

Hall also drew a first-round bye and lost to Carla Ponce (6-3 decision) and Flores.

After drawing an opening-round bye, Koral Sugiyama lost to Michelle Fazzari and Ktystin Paquette.

63-KG: Hannah Gladden drew a first-round bye and then defeated Jessica Brouilette (fall 1:56) before losing consecutive matches to Ayka Ito (10-0 tech fall) and Amanda Hendley (fall 1:13).

69-KG: After an opening round bye, Hanna Hall lost to Stacie Anaka (2-1 decision) and defeated Yvonne Galindo (10-1 decision). She then lost to Julia Salata (11-0 tech fall).
