RINCON, Puerto Rico — Campbellsville flipped an 11-point first quarter deficit and rallied to win tonight over NCAA DII University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez in the Rincon Arena, 72-51.
The Lady Tigers didn't seem ready for the physical nature in the early going as the Janes scored the last nine points of the first quarter to lead at that stop, 20-9.
"We told them about it (the physical nature of the game)," said coach Ginger Colvin. "We looked a little fatigued, looked like we were playing with sea legs."
CU (11-3, 3-1 MSC) got only 16 points out of the post where a lot of bodies congregated, so in the second half Colvin decided to go with a smaller lineup. It worked.
"I think it took getting down to wake us up. They allow you to play very, very physical and I think we were a little shell shocked early," offered Colvin.
Lindsey Burd scored six of her eight points during a two-minute stretch of the second quarter to pull the Lady Tigers within three, 28-27 and Madison Stewart's layup late made the score 28-27, Mayaguez, at the intermission.
But in the second half, Campbellsville scored 25 of the game's next 32 points to separate itself with a 52-35 third-quarter lead. During the stretch, Emily Fox hit a layup on a back-door cut and then Abby Miller, Burd and Stewart all scored before Lexxus Graham hit another bucket off a back-door to give CU a nine-point lead, 41-33.
Graham and LeeAnn Grider led four players in double figures for Campbellsville with 12 apiece. Stewart and Fox added 10 each.
The Lady Tigers could only manage eight makes on 26 3-point attempts with Grider, Graham and Fox hitting two each. Madison Kaiser and Alexis Pester had one each.
The Lady Tigers get a night off before playing the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez again on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 4 ET. Check @rbrobards on Twitter for in-game tweets.
