Strong second half propels CU to 24th-straight win at home

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger hoops overcame a slow start on Friday night and scorched the nets, hitting 46 percent from 3-point land en route to winning its 24-straight home game, 80-60 over NAIA DII Asbury University.

BOX SCORE

The Tigers (11-4, 1-3 MSC) will now have one final game before the Christmas break, as CU hosts Truett-McConnell College tomorrow night, Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. ET. Asbury University concludes the first half of the season with an 8-7 record and 1-1 inside the KIAC.

The Eagles came out soaring in the opening minutes and led for almost 15 minutes of the first half. CU struggled from the floor and missed six of its first seven attempts.

After tying the game at 15 with 9:12 remaining in the first half, Campbellsville did not hit another field goal until Sekou Harris sparked a late run with 5:12 remaining. Asbury took a five-point lead, 23-18 but the Tigers got hot late, ending the first half on an 18-4 run and hitting 7-of-8 from the floor during that stretch.

Dii'jon Allen-Jordan scored nine points during that span, while Hagen Tyler drilled two of his five 3-pointers and Zach Perry added another.

Allen-Jordan led all scorers with 21 points, while hitting 8-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He narrowly missed his eighth double-double, grabbing nine rebounds in 26-plus minutes of play. Tyler scored 15 points – all from 3-point land.

From 5:10 to 1:34 on the clock in the first half, Asbury went 0-of-6 before Kyle Lamb scored four points in the final minute, giving Campbellsville its largest lead at halftime, 36-27.

The second half was all CU. After hitting only 37 percent in the first 20 minutes, Campbellsville blistered the nets, hitting 16-of-28 (57 percent) in the second frame.

Although Campbellsville knocked down shots in the second half, the Tigers turned the ball over 11 times and attempted 12 less shots than the Eagles. Asbury forced 20 turnovers and only had eight mishaps itself in the contest.

The Tigers athleticism and height did give Asbury fits in the paint, though. The only way Asbury would be able to come out of Powell Athletic Center with a win is if they got hot from 3 but that was not the case. The Eagles finishing hitting 21 percent from behind the arc (6-of-28).

Campbellsville also out-rebounded the Eagles, 51-35. The 51 rebounds for CU is the highest since the opening game of the season against Ohio-Chillicothe when the Tigers had 52. Shawn Johnson led all rebounders with 10 boards. Johnson has come on strong as of late, averaging eight rebounds in the last four games.

Tomorrow nights contest will be streamed live on the CU Sports Network, 88.7 The Tiger and http://portal.stretchinternet.com/camp/
