CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Bolstered by a couple of first-place finishes by Kayla Miracle and Hannah Gladden, CU women's wrestling finished runner-up in their initial NAIA Invitational today in the Powell Athletic Center.
"The team wrestled well today," said coach Lee Miracle. "We are still only producing at about 70 percent. We have some wrestlers not wrestling to their potential yet or wrestlers not in the line up because of health or weight issues. When we start firing on all cylinders, we have the chance to do something special."
Miracle and Gladden combined for 50 team points as the Lady Tigers accumulated 181 ½ points, edging the University of Cumberlands by one point to secure second place overall. Oklahoma City, with three winners and four second-place finishers, won the team title in the nine-team field.
SCORING: Oklahoma City, 211 ½; Campbellsville 181 ½; University of the Cumberlands, 180 ½; Life University, 111; Missouri Baptist, 71; Missouri Valley, 70 ½; Lindenwood-Belleville, 25 ½; Lyon College, 21; Patriot Wrestling Club, 0.
Miracle said several wrestlers did very well today, led by Kayla Miracle and Hannah Gladden. It was Miracle's first WCWA competition of the year.
"She was extremely dominate and blew through the competition." Continued Miracle. "Gladden is coming along nicely in her development and is a true contender for a national championship this year. Rosemary Flores had a great tournament beating some tough competition on the way to the finals where she ran into Miracle. Michelle Organ wrestled well today placing third while defeating No. 2 ranked teammate Hanna Hall and losing by criteria to No 1 ranked Jessica Rottier in a great battle that ended 4-4."
"Koral Sugiyama, Kait Hill, and Rebecca Carson also placed third today. I've come to expect Sugiyama to perform but, Hill and Carson showed real improvement. It was fun to watch.
"Overall we had 15 wrestlers place. We have girls working on individual weaknesses so they can better themselves before we get to Nationals. These young ladies are focused on improving and have an end goal in mind. Although we go out to win every match, everything up until Nationals is just practice."

"The tournament ran very smoothly," said Miracle. "Mark Durham out of Indiana was our tournament director and he is regarded as the best in the Midwest. He provided incredible expertise to allow us to run the tournament smoothly through Track Wrestling and to stream the action live.
"Kasey Ricketts acted as the assistant tournament director and did a fantastic job enabling me to focus on coaching the 23 athletes CU had entered into the tournament. The Information Technology, Security, Maintenance, and Oscar Vaughn all really stepped up and helped out after hours on their own time to make this tournament run smoothly."
