Campbellsville put together an eight-run top of the first in the season opener, led by a three-run home run by designated player Markie Smith. CU loaded the bases to start the inning, scoring its first run on a walk by Hailey Szpila and then a passed ball to score Brittany Rippy before the three-run shot. Following the homer, Erin Benton scored on a triple by Rebecca Miller and later scored on an error. Jacqueline Roof drove in the last run of the inning with an RBI groundout to the pitcher's circle.
Adrean Jordan doubled in CU's ninth run in the second, scoring Szpila.
CU's 9-0 lead held until the fourth, when Grace picked up a leadoff single from Hannah Hebster, who scored an unearned run after two CU errors.
The Lady Tigers added four runs in the top of the fifth on a Jacqueline Roof grand slam to compete the mercy rule win.
Neely Quint went the distance in the circle for CU, allowing three hits, one walk and one unearned run in the win.
Game two was a complete-game shutout for junior pitcher Victoria Decker, who allowed only three hits, two walks and struck out four through seven innings of work. Campbellsville collected all of its offense in the bottom of the fourth on a Shelby Ray RBI ground out and a two-run single by Roof.
Roof led Campbellsville with seven RBIs on 2-for-5 hitting in the two games. She was the only Lady Tiger to record multiple hits. Smith had three RBIs, while Szpila, Jordan, Miller and Ray each had one.
Campbellsville (2-0) is scheduled to return to action Feb. 20-21 in the Arctic Blast in Decatur, Ala., after the rest of this weekend's MMC Meltdown was canceled due to weather.Â
