Tiger baseball knocks off No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett

Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The weather forecast threw the Tigers a couple of curveballs Wednesday, but it was the Campbellsville University pitchers that won the day. No. 24 Campbellsville put together a four-run second inning and then shut down No. 3 Georgia Gwinett, 4-1, following a last-minute schedule change to complete CU's Spring Break trip.

The Tigers were originally scheduled to play at Talladega College on Wednesday, but due to wet field conditions, the game was moved to the Auburn University Montgomery campus, nearly two hours away in Montgomery, Ala., where CU swept AUM the previous two days. Once the predicted rain came in early, the game was scratched and CU rerouted its trip up I-85 to Georgia to pick up the unplanned 7 p.m. game at the Grizzly Baseball Complex

It is the third game added to the CU schedule this season, which has already had 16 games canceled due to weather.

The game started with a scoreless first inning, but Campbellsville went to work in the top of the second. The Tigers loaded the bases to start the inning, with Garrett Everhart being hit by a pitch and walks to Jeremy Rosenthal and Richard Ramirez. Grizzy starter Alex Roberts was pulled after the three free passes and later took the loss.

With the bases juiced, and no outs, Ricky McColloch drove a 1-0 triple down the right field line to put CU on the board, 3-0. The Tigers later added an unearned run when Casey Scott's pop up foul ball was dropped and followed by a Scott RBI single to plate McColloch. Though GGC reliever Davis Adkins gave up the final run and two hits in the second, he went on to pitch 7 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and striking out six.

The Grizzlies (20-5) posed a small threat in the third, but Tiger starter Chris Tuma got a fly ball to center to get out of the inning. The Grizzlies once again got things going in the bottom of the fourth, sparked by a two-out double by Jereid Woods. Brian Jacobs followed with an RBI single through the hole at second for Georgia Gwinnett's only run of the day. Woods and William Paschal each had two hits to lead Gwinnett.

Tuma was pulled after allowing a two-out walk in the sixth. He went 5 2/3 innings for the win, allowing only one run off five hits. He walked four and struck out four. Jake Pannunzio made a brief appearance in the sixth, but was also pulled after allowing a walk.

Indalecio Romo pitched out of the inning and had three strikeouts on the day, while Matt Robertson and Logan Truex each had one strikeout in an inning of work. Robertson's two hits allowed in the bottom of the eighth were the only given up by a Tiger reliever during the game.

In addition to McColloch and Scott's hits, Shane Woodson had a double and Alex Kline, Carlos Torres and Ryan Squires  each had a single to round out the Tigers' six for the game.

Campbellsville (9-2) is scheduled to open Mid-South Conference action Saturday at 6 p.m. ET at Lindsey Wilson College's Egnew Field. A doubleheader is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. The series was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

CU's only losses so far this year are on the road at now No. 17 Tennessee Wesleyan College and No. 2 Faulkner University.
