No. 24 Tigers swept in MSC-opening doubleheader

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Campbellsville was held scoreless through its first 14 innings of Mid-South Conference baseball Sunday, losing 4-0 and 11-1, in a doubleheader at Lindsey Wilson College's Egnew Park.

The 24th-ranked Tigers were held to only one hit in the conference opener, with Jamie Valle breaking up Ryan Hartman's no-hitter with a leadoff single in the ninth. Hartman struck out six in the complete-game shutout in game one, allowing one hit, two walks and there was one error through nine innings of work.

CU starter Mario Morales was locked in a pitchers' duel with Hartman to start the game, allowing only one hit through the first four innings. The Blue Raiders got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after Morales hit Brandon Munoz to start the inning. Aaron Ashton, Fabian Chirino and Dustin Woody each singled in the inning. Munoz scored the first run on a sac fly by Victor Nazario, and Chirino's single drove in Ashton for a 2-0 LWC lead.

Nazario added a two-run homer in the seventh for the 4-0 win.

Morales (2-1) allowed four runs off seven hits through seven innings. He struck out five.

In game two, Alex Bautista crushed a 2-2, two-out pitch over the center field fence to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

Tiger starter Indalecio Romo shut down the Blue Raiders in the second and third, but gave up a four-spot in the fourth and two in the fifth before being pulled for Alex Cline. Cline also gave up a run in the fifth for an 8-0 LWC lead.

Campbellsville's only run of the day came in the top of the sixth and was aided by an error and two wild pitches. Casey Scott reached on an error to start the inning and took third on a wild pitch by Scott Sebald. Three batters later, Scott was credited with stealing home to make it an 8-1 game.

However, LWC answered in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs.

Garrett Everhart and Shane Woodson each hit 2-for-3 for CU in the second game to lead the Tigers' offense in the doubleheader. Jeremy Rosenthal and Richard Ramirez joined Valle with a single each.

Lindsey Wilson designated hitter Kory Weeks was 4-for-4 in the second game after going 0-for-3 in the first game. Nazario was 4-for-6 with five RBI and four runs scored in the two games combined, while Chirino was 4-for-7 with five RBI.

Campbellsville (9-4, 0-2 MSC) is scheduled to return to Lindsey Wilson (13-7, 2-0 MSC) on Monday for the final game of the series at 5 p.m. ET.
